I just wanted to clarify the importance of applying early...it is mainly in order to get an interview invite and acceptance on Dec 1, right? It's only after Dec 1 that schools use the rolling admissions policy? That's what I gathered from Harvard's website, anyway. http://hsdm.harvard.edu/academics/dmd/admissions_process

Or do most schools literally have rolling admissions throughout the process, meaning they start accepting students before Dec 1?

Thank you! 😱

rolling starts the day the app cycle opens up.

Yeah, from what I understand from talking to admissions people at different schools, as soon as a school starts getting applications, the more you delay sending your application, the less of a chance you have of getting in. Maybe Harvard does things different though...especially if you have a rich dad.

nobody is accepted prior to december 1. however, preference is given to early applicants from the very beginning. if you apply in september you are less likely to be interviewed and accepted on december 1 (or at all) than if you apply in june.

Less likely to get interviewed if applying in September - yes, only if they have already scheduled out all interviews by that time.

Less likely to get in if applying in September - only if you don't have an interview by that point. Otherwise, your chances of getting in are no difference is you apply in June or September if you have competative stats. If you have less than competative states, maybe.

Thank you, that really helps clarify things! I'm going to apply within the next two weeks; I was just wondering if schools look down on you or something for applying later in the season. I guess the disadvantage is there are fewer interview invites left to hand out.

Everything is rolling, but there is an agreement among all dental schools that they do not release acceptance letters until December 1st. So the goal of applying early (before August) is to be in on that mailing date.

You're encouraged to apply early because it becomes progressively harder to land an interview spot later on in the game when your application is viewed amongst hundreds of other competitive applicants. Even though they haven't given out official spots, they have a good idea of who is on their 'yes' list.

My application was submitted in Aug and completed in mid-Sept. I still had all my interviews by mid-Nov. Received all my acceptances on Dec1st. As long as you are competitive, most likely there will be slots available for interviews.

i agree that applying super early is probably a bit overblown, but by september you are at a significant disadvantage. for every one of you there is a kid who applied in aug/sep with reasonable stats that got nothing and is sitting around wondering whether applying in june would've yielded the same result. i don't think either of your experiences make an open and shut case about it.

all we can say for certain is that when you apply late there are fewer interview spots left to receive, and it is possible (i would say likely) that you will be looked upon less favorably than an identical applicant who applied early.

It can depend on the school. Some schools will tell you they start looking at applications on a certain date, say the 1st week of August for example, and that any applications received before that date are given equal priority.
