Hello Everyone,

I am an intern in EM and I was wondering which of those two textbooks you recommend for residency. I have asked my fellow residents and faculty this question but no one seems to have a consensus.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

P.S. BTW I have heard that a new edition of Rosen's is coming out in November......is this true?

I have both. I only use either of them when I need in depth research on a topic. There are a number of better books for basic reading. Some residencies require one or the other.

I like Rosen's better because it's easier to tote around. When I travel to my parents for a weekend visit, I can bring it on the plane with me. That's not possible with Tintinalli.

I think Tintinalli is more in-depth for most subjects.

Do you have them backwards? My 3-volume Rosen in 5pt type is not portable, vs my one-volume, larger type, less-detailed Tintinalli.

I took my tintanalli to Kinkos, had it split into 5 sections and bound. It cost about 20 bucks and its very portable. I NEVER carry my rosen.

I would look at both of them at your residency and see which style of writing you like best, then just pick one.

The type in Rosen's is 10 point, not 5 point. Tintinalli uses an 8 point type.

I was referring to the fact that I can take ONE volume of Rosen's with me when I travel, as opposed to the entire 2200-page book of Tintinalli. It's easier to tote around a 600-page book than a 2200-page book. Yes, you are correct, it will become a nuissance if I toted all 3 volumes, but I do not do that.

Rosen's type is larger than Tintinalli. Are you referring to the Tintinalli study books maybe? They have decent type (11 point), but the 6th ed. Tintinalli is 8 point type.

Sorry, just got in from picking the girl up from the airport. We're about to call it a night... hint hint.

And yet you post anyway.

Dude, the first step is admitting you have a problem. Just step away from the keyboard. 🙂

Take care,
Jeff

I like Tint a little better, although I own both. I am finally going to break down and have my huge book dismembered, though, as it is quite a tome. seems like tintinalli does a good job of covering the basic pathophys/tx and is somewhat to the point.

go on getchasome southerndoc.

When the book is dismembered, what is it bound to? 3 ring binders? The pages are pretty thin and low weight, so I think it would be easy to rip them.

Read 'em both. And then Harwood-Nuss. 🙂

It has some kind of plastic cover front and a back binding thing. Its hard to explain. OH! I can take a digital picture and post it. I'll try to do that today. but just go to kinkos and tell them you have a text you want split. they can give you all kinds of options.....

Anybody have any suggestions for good books for intern year?

I learn well from books, so am looking for your thoughts on Tintinalli v. Rosen's.

Also, I was thinking about getting something smaller, like pocket EM or manual for EM

BTW, what do people use for off-service rotations?

I am curious about the Tint v Rosen question as well, and some of the other smaller or subject specific books that folks have thought were high yield.

Particularly, did anyone pick up an EM book on iPad or Kindle and have any thoughts about how that worked out? I wonder if the portability is worth what you give up in terms of looking at two large pages at once, etc.

I think it's actually going to be April (of next year). I've been reading Rosen's and have been really liking it. Great pathophysiology explanations, very in-depth. Maybe too in-depth for a first pass of the material, though.

Kind of a shame. I started reading Tintinalli last week and liked it. However, today I was reading Rosen's really liked it, I also was impressed with the PDF access via MD consult. Made the text seem more portable via an iPad. Oh well, it's not like if I wait til next year I'll finish it before the next edition releases.

I'll weigh in: there will be no consensus. Everybody is going to like one over the other for reasons of style, color, brevity, etc.

The medicine in each is the same. I vote for Tintinalli just because I think its more direct.

That post was from 2005.

Anyone want to comment on this?
Thinking about if I want to buy an iPad or similar device mainly for this reason.

The current version of Rosen's is available on elseiver and MDConsult, where you can access PDF versions of the chapters which would nice on an iPad
