after completing the study of the basic sciences Ross students spend a semester in a Miami hospital preparing for their 3rd and 4th years. Is this as beneficial as it sounds? And did Ross students find it hard for USMLE 1 after a semester break or did this hands on experience help for the test?

Ross offers students the option of taking this "fifth semester" either in Miami or continuing at Princess Margaret hospital in Dominica. Personally, I did the fifth semester in Miami. Overall, I found the entire program to be less than desirable. It did afford a few good experiences, but mostly they were few and far between. It was difficult to find short-term housing there, and the school wasn't very helpful in that regard either. The program was generally disorganized when I went through it, and from what I understand not much has changed in the past couple of years. However, the physical exam portion of the course was top-notch and provided an excellent review of the proper way to do a head-to-toe examination of the patient, despite the fact that more formal instruction would have been nice.

I think the strongest selling point of this program is the fact that you can get off of Dominica in 16 months, if you complete the first four semesters of the pre-clinical curriculum without any "hiccups". However, if I had to do it all over again, I would have - without a doubt - stayed in Dominica the additional 9 weeks of this "fifth semester" and I'm fairly certain that, overall, I would have had a much better experience. All totaled, I would have to say that the Miami "fifth semester" program is by far the weakest portion of the entire medical education curriculum that Ross offers.
