I guess I'm trying to figure out if the benefits of added face time and the director getting to know you better outweigh the risk of not impressing a doc that (theoretically) has higher standards then his colleagues (regular attendings). Are they going to expect that much more from a student that you have to be miles ahead of a fellow student who rotates with an attending? Does no one have any first hand experience with this?

I say go for it if you have the kind of personality that people warm to very quickly. If that is the case and you are a hard worker and always punctual it could be very beneficial if the PD likes you.

The bold is the most important part of what the previous poster said. Also I think being warm helps but as long as your personable and not a weirdo then you should be fine personality wise(just don't stick out like the weird little brother that no one wants to be around because I have had PDs tell me already that your co-residents are your FAMILY for the x number of years until you finish so you want to leave a good impression with them). I also have a fourth year rotation set up to where I am working with a PD directly as well. Am I scared- yep. Am I going to work all my scheduled days and see if I can work with the other docs during my off days some, get to work early, stay late and read as much as I can in that month-YEP.
Also if you can schedule a rotation that is similar to what you are going to rotate in with the PD that will help you as well so you are not totally lost.....
There was a woman at my school with an outrageous personality that rubbed people the wrong way every time she opened her mouth. She did audition rotations at several places she was hoping to match. I spoke to the residents at one program and they said there is NO WAY they would rank her because then they would have to spend a few years with her. (she didn't match at all)
Someone like that is better off applying cold and letting their numbers speak for them.
