I just got accepted into KCUMB and CCOM, and I'm thinking about going with CCOM... however, I have a DMU interview in 2 weeks and I really loved the school during the summer open house. Still I am debating canceling this interview due to time and money (mostly the time taken away from my research). It would be beneficial for me to decide between CCOM and DMU prior to my interview so that if I know for sure I want CCOM there's no point in going, and that if I know I want DMU more then it's worth the time away. Especially since I've already seen the campus and have talked to students and admission counselors. I've made a Pro Con list between the two:
Pro DMU Interview:
Good friendly atmosphere
Des Moines is a nice city and better than the rest of Iowa
Highly ranked (advisor said #2 for DO but I have no idea where she got this statistic)
Good Global Health program
Great Match rates (over 90% of students get their first or second choice and the statistic for ccom is only 78% I think)
Roughly $15,000 a year cheaper than CCOM
DO I shadowed was from here and loved the experience
More elective rotations than ccom
Con DMU Interview:
I don't own a car and would probably need to rent one or fly $$$
I'll miss more class than I already have and it's midterm time
My family lives only an hour away from CCOM= better support system
My boyfriend of 2 years is likely going to be in Chicago at an MD school there.
Rotations look amazing and our close to Chicago, or near the area. So if I had to move hospital to hospital at least they're all near each other so I wouldn't have to move every month or near family so I don't need to pay rent on 2 places.... which is a hidden cost I think DMU rotations might have.
Chicago is amazing
Only a few rotations in Illinois and not year round.
After talking to my advisor she said to ask students about the rotation site issue to see if that could sway things either way. Are there any CCOM or DMU students who can share some input? Does the school or affiliated hospitals help you find a place to stay or are you on your own hunting for a new apartment each month? Do they have designated rotation apartments and pay for your new place out of tuition costs? I was told some schools are known to do this. If the answer to these is yes, how many students can this program support? Is it easy to get a spot?
Thank you for any responses!!!
