This may have been asked before, but I ust learned last year rotations can be done away from your pharmacy school. Is this correct for both 3 and 4 year schools?

"Done away"? As in, completed, or..?

FYI, rotations are different from residencies.

I believe APCE, the group in charge of accrediting pharmacy schools, has various guidelines regarding what a pharmacy school education program entails. Of these requirements, are x amount of hours required for introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE) and advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE).

APPEs are done your final year in pharmacy school; in a four year program, this is what is known as your "rotations," and these experiences are to help fulfill those hours required for you to receive your PharmD. (And also so that you may get hands-on experience in various pharmacy settings)

Following your completion of a PharmD program, you can then choose to take on a PGY-1, or a residency. This is where you are practicing as a pharmacist, but still under a sort of "learning" establishment. (Notably, pharmacy residents are not paid as much as pharmacists.)

She said "rotations done away from pharmacy school", so, "done in a location not near your pharmacy school".

This depends on the school. In my program you can do rotations just about anywhere if you find preceptors to precept those rotations (which is a challenge because most hospitals already have contracts with other pharmacy schools) and have them fill out an "out-of-network form".

I'm aware of the difference between rotation and residency. I'm specifically asking about the completion of rotations, as in the final year of pharmacy school. I've seen mention of completing them in districts apart from the vicinty of the school; as in, if you attend Midwestern in AZ, completing rotations in San Diego.
I'm wondering if this is indeed acurate, or if rotations are completed with specific institutions related to your specific school.

Anyone know the answer?

Thanks bacillus1. You must have posted right as I was replying.

I work in the San Jose California area. We have had students do rotations that came from Midwestern in AZ, Wayne U in MI, UCSF, etc.

Just last month I talked to a pharmacist who graduated last year from University of the Pacific in Stockton and he did all his rotations near San Jose.

Apologies! I read "done away" like.. "done with"

bacillus1 pretty much answered the question; it's program specific, and it will depend on the school. Most schools have a set list of rotation locations already picked out. At UIC-COP, most of these are around the Chicago/Illinois area. If you wanted to select a different site, you would have to talk to the people setting up rotation sites and ask them to help set some up in another state. For example, if you wanted to go to CA for your rotation, your school will need to contact the CA area, and find one. There's a bit of a "territorial element" involved too, since there will be pharmacy schools around that area, they need to make sure they are respecting that. To gain a more thorough understanding of a school's specific process and sites available, you may wish to contact the coordinators there.

Sorry again for misunderstanding your question. ]:
