i'll be starting rotations soon and i know a handheld pda will be very helpful. but does anyone know of a good one out there? there are so many out there and i'm not computer savvy. does anyone have any recommendations?? whats a good brand? how much memory does one need? any good software to use? any help will be greatly appreciated.🙂

I use Palm TX throughout my rotations and afterwards.
It had a lot of advantages like Wi-Fi, bluetooth, large screen, memory of 128MB that was enough for me.
Check out this:

I am using a lot of free softwares:
Mainely Epocrates and also loaded merck manual and ABX giude that was very helpful for my hospital rotations.

Hope that helped..Good Luck.

At UIC, once you get your University of Illinois Hospital password during P-3 year or for some earlier, you can download Micromedex free. See what you can get through your school.
How much are you willing to pay? You can find a lot of decently priced used PDAs through eBay and the like.
With memory, you can get a memory card for most of them.

I have an HP iPAQ. I barely used it, though (but Spiriva's post reminded me of tuning out to play games on it during that part of the rounds when they would look at x-rays for two hours at a time 😀).

I would usually run to a nearest real computer and check whatever source I needed if I needed. 🙂

A wise professor once told me that our brain should function as our PDA. Medical residents can look things up on a PDA, we should bring more to the table. I haven't needed one yet.

****, I completely agree with you. It's a crutch, really. I would bet that most students could function equally as well without them. The only REAL use I had for it was the price estimator. Now THAT was useful.
