Hey everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed the difference in how Male med students are treated as compared to Female med students by their preceptors. I have had more than one male preceptor who treated the male students like the scum of the earth and the way they breath is wrong. Yet the Female (especially if she is good looking) does nothing wrong. What is up with this??? From personal experience, I have been the student down in the blood and grime, helping the ancillary staff, getting to the hospital early to pre-round and know all of my patients, going home after a 12-13 hour day and still reading for a couple of hours to know my topic, yet with some preceptors if I had breasts and was decently attractive I could do none of this and be the "perfect med student." Now before you female med students start ranting and raving that you go through the same thing as male students realize that I am not saying this against you. I think that males and female students are equal in all ways and if I was a preceptor I would treat them that way. I have been on rotations where my female peer was better than I in some areas and I think she deserved the credit she received for the hard work and effort she put in but I have been on others when the student did absolutely nothing but buddy up to the male preceptor and it made me sick. I mean I literally wanted to go barf in one of those little kidney shaped basins!!! Why can't male preceptors see through this oh you are so wonderful Dr. so and so? Let me wink my big blue eyes at you and blush everytime you save a life, oh and don't forget that I must laugh at everyone of your medical jokes that 50 preceptors have told me before. Why can't they see through this??? It just amazes me how many preceptors don't.
Looking forward to any good comments on this. Am I way off base here or has anyone else had the same experience at some time or another?
