I'm asking it here because the rotationsl forum is not very active. Maybe you guys would know.

1. Why is it important to do your rotation/residency at the best hospitals? In other words, what's so good about it? Do you get paid more after you graduate or is it just a name?

2. Which hospitals are the most prestigious for doing rotations and residency? Is it the same as the list generated by usnews?

It's not really important to do your residency or rotations at the 'best hospitals' unless it is important to YOU.

True...not all hospitals are created equal when it comes to residencies, but you need to evaluate what you want in a program.

As far as rotations go, you should try to do rotations where you think you will get the best clinical experience in the 4-6 weeks you are there. Sometimes this may be the big trauma center or the small community hospital. Again, each has their own little things you must consider.

As far as which hospitals are the best for rotations and residencies...well, you might as well as which is the nicest public toilet in Denver. Who knows?

Each program has its strengths. Hospital A may have a great Peds residency but may fall short on their EM residency. Namesake doesnt mean as much as you may think. As far as rotations go, I have talked to many people who have done rotations at the 'best' hospitals and find they have a poor experience...usually they dont get to do that much because it is such a large teaching center.

Each program and hospital must be looked at individually.

i asked this same question a couple of days ago to a doc, and here was his response: "it's essential. other docs always ask you where you trained. just work hard and get into the best program you can find".

take that with a grain of salt, though. like JPHazelton said, shop around and find the one that fits. it might not be harvard, but believe me when i say harvard doesn't train docs that are noticably better than others- they're just made to believe they are, and trained to say the word "harvard" every three and a half minutes.
