Lately I have been seeing lots of people with these rubber shoes on walking around the hospital.. just wondering if anyone knows if they are something worth buying & where to get them/what brand. I think they look fun! 😳

That's them. Ugly, but comfortable as hell. I like to wear mine w/ scrubs.
Strangely enough, you can often find them for sale at Hallmark stores, often at the mall. Either 20 or 30 bucks, I forget.
And they are definitely worth buying. Very comfortable, and a great conversation piece. "Hey, check out my ugly shoes"
The only downside is, as they are rubber they wouldn't breath well, except there are a bunch of holes on the top. As in, holes for stuff to leak into . So, if you think you're going to be around body fluids, I advise shoe covers.
But otherwise they're nice. You can move the back strap forward to wear as a slip on, or if you have trouble keeping them on, you can put the strap in the back.
The soles have a bunch of rubber bumps in them that massage your feet, and they're just cushy enough.

As a side note, for people that start getting sore feet, legs and back after just a short time wearing normal dress shoes such as Dockers, try slipon dress shoes. I recommend Borns. They look very nice, and more importantly, you don't feel like whacking off your legs at the end of the day.

I'm A respiratory therapist, so I am on my feet alot while seeing patients in different parts of a huge hospital. I never get sore feet since I began wearing crocs. My wife is a RN in a busy SICu, and she swears by the crocs also.....all that for $30.....which is a lot less than the birks (her feet were sore by morning w/ the birks).

I have the black ones with only the holes on the sides (Crocs-Metro). My feet never get sweaty, and you don't have to worry about stuff getting in. I still wear shoes covers in the OR though. They are so comfortable I actually look forward to putting them on. You can buy them online:

I also don't think the black ones without holes are unattractive. No more so than any other clog out there.

p.s., dansko's suck

What about buying the crocs metro or the crocs highland so that we don't have to wear shoe covers? Does anyone have any comments on those two types of crocs?

Like I said, I have the metros. I wouldn't worry about stuff getting in them unless there is either blood/urine/etc. pouring over the side of the table, or creating huge puddles on the ground. The holes on the sides even have little shields on the top to prevent fluids from getting in from above.

I wear shoes covers in the OR because the idea of walking through blood then walking around the hospital and outside is nasty.

Oh right 🙂 One of these days I need to learn how to read properly 😛

I was hoping to get some more current advice on Crocs in the OR. I bought some with perforations along the top and sides of the shoe and was curious if this type of Croc was still acceptable? I'm assuming that since shoe covers are still the norm in the OR it shouldn't matter whether I have Crocs with or without holes, but confirmation either way would be much appreciated!

Does anyone remember jellies from the early 90s? Well I was wearing some at a pet store one day around '93 and a rat peed all over my feet. I had to clean up in the fish department. I'll skip on the human pee/vomit/body fluid of choice all over my feet, but I'll probably still look into Crocs.

Anybody know if the Croc rip-offs (like $10 instead of $30) are just as comfy and durable?

The last time I shadowed some residents they had some Crocs (looked like them) that were autoclavable. Are those normal Crocs?

Never tried to autoclave them (because really, what's the point? You walk on the floor for 3 seconds and all the bacteria is back), but I wore Crocs in the hospital all through med school. Even in the OR, my back and legs never hurt, which was a problem when I wore sneakers.

I thought it was interesting that you could autoclave the clogs if you got blood or other fluids on them. I think these might be the ones: http://www.allheart.com/autoclavables.html . Probably not worth the extra money?

Pity Crocs are the ugliest, wanky, most stupid-looking things you can put on your body.

If you want to be taken seriously, don't wear them. At least that's what the attitude is where I am.

What are Pity Crocs?

Pity = "A pity that" 🙂

 I thought "Pity Crocs" too when I first read that! Start a new line and charge $60 for the super special kind of rubber that only the coolest people in the hospitals wear.

In support of the world's ugliest shoe: My mom has a lot of problems with her feet. She finally tried a pair of Crocs and they are pretty much the only shoe she can wear all day without pains by mid-afternoon.

Ahh, an exception to every rule. 😉

I do have a pair of crocs that I wear for gardening, walking the dog, etc, and they are pretty comfortable, although they are so chunky I feel like I would be tripping over stuff all the time if I wore them indoors. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking around the hospital with footwear that had holes in the top, but it seems like all the nurses and some of the docs wear them. The holes bother me not only for the body fluid issue but also the fact that a needle/other sharp object could find its way into one of those holes if dropped. The ones without holes on the top seem ok.

I am going to second the Croc hating post. Tried them, they are comfy but so so bad looking. For a skinny lanky person like myself they look like clown shoes. I just cant do that to myself on a daily basis. Gotta stick with my boy house on the Nike Shox, very comfy, slightly more stylish. Also a big fan of Diesel shoes.

I think Crocs are supposed to be washable. You could just take them home and bleach them as well.

I love crocs just because the fact that they are so comfortable. I'd rather be comfortable and less stylish than uncomfortable almost any day.

I bet when I am in the hospital, practically living there, I will have bags under my eyes and my hair will look like I didn't have time to dry/style it because I took an extra 20 minutes of sleep in the morning. At that point, I doubt I will care about the style of my shoes. I'll take comfort over fashion.

I worked in the lab this year and we weren't allowed to wear crocs because of the holes and the risk of body fluids etc. A few of us wore a brand called Quarks. They are awesome. They are like a clog, no holes, your feet don't sweat and they are available in a wide variety of colors. I wore bright pink. My patients knew me as the pink shoe lady. I'm thinking about getting a less bright color for the wards though.

I had a few people try to tell me that, but frankly it's stupid. Sneakers aren't watertight, nor are most other types of shoes. If you're worried, you'd put on shoe covers anyway, making the entire point moot. Plus, I know blood won't ruin my Crocs, but my sneakers are another story.

I heard that Mario Batali runs his orange Crocs through the dishwasher.

I'm resisting this trend for as long as possible. If not because they are the ugliest footwear imaginable, then because I refuse to be ripped off so heinously. I've seen them (or a very good knock-off of the brand) sold in Hong Kong for like 50 cents. 😡

get danskos!!! crocs are soft, squishy, fun and somewhat ugly. 😱 Danskos are not prettier but are soooo much better for your feet and knees. :hardy:

I just bought a pair of dansko professionals and I love them! I ended up getting the matte leather. They're not beautiful, but they sure make a difference in my posture. The shiny leather version is a little easier to clean, but they fit more snugly, so it may not work for a wider foot (such as mine). One recommendation: if you are considering Danskos, make sure to go to a shoestore and at least get fitted (even if you want to order them online). The heel counter should not be tight against your foot (there should be enough space to fit one finger between the heel and shoe, so that the shoe can walk you instead of you walking the shoe.

I have walmart rip-off crocs. not the same thing- well, they are uncomfortable. I almost never wear them and they were a big waste of cash.😡 I imagine the real things would be more comfy tho.

I thought I saw ugly rubber shoes before when I started reading about the Crocs, but when I took an actual look online, it makes me want to vomit. That's the most unstylish crap I have ever seen.

wow. if the only bad thing people can say about these *work* shoes is that they are ugly, then i'm sold!

I just tried on crocs at the mall yesterday and was really dissapointed. They seem really comfy but in one size my toes were squished and in the next size up they were nearly falling off my feet and they don't come in half sizes. It looks like they don't make them for my size feet. Anyone else have this problem with them?

Calzuros makes a very nice rubber clog, with or without upper ventilation holes. They take a while to break in, but last forever (Danskos last only 1-2 years). They stay on your feet better than Danskos also. They are autoclavable.

Danskos, on the other hand, tend to look a lot nicer. They come open in the back or closed in the back (both should have a clog fit, though). You can wear the ones with a closed back in clinic or with dress clothes. Calzuro's look a little to industrial for that (at least in my opinion). The heel on a dansko is a little higher than a Calzuro, which can be good or bad depending on your posture. The heel helps protect your back and knees. The Calzuro heel, however, is adequate. As mentioned, Danskos don't stay on your foot quite as well, so they are almost impossible to run in and will come off.

If you get the Calzuro, make sure you get the insoles that come with it.

Best,
Anka

Yes, mid-sizes don't really exist. Considering they have STORES full of Crocs, you would think they would begin to manufacture sizes with differing widths (narrow, wide) and lengths (8.5, 10.5). 👎

Other than crocs, I like Quarks. You can find them at any nursing store. They're great if you have stupidly high arches (like myself). I've been wearing them for years and the feel great.

Then there's also z-coils. A lot of people like these. I have a pair that was given to me (I hear they're quite expensive), but honestly, they don't do anything for my arch and they make you walk completly straight/flat which is hard to do when you're tired. (super high arches always make me walk on the outside edge of my foot when I'm tired, bad idea with that big spring).
