Possibly a dumb question.

"The rule of thirds".. does that mean to APPLY to 1/3 reach, 1/3 mid, 1/3 safety

It is apply to ensure that you get enough interviews to match. Having said that, I wouldn't have my rank list be 100% reaches.

Texas AMG, 246, 3/6 honors, no AOA, usual EC, 2 research (1 rad), no pub

All in Florida
All in Texas
No NE or west coast
I really have no intention of doing my residency in any other states, so the rest are mostly big academic referral center

I dunno, sounds like you at least heard from TX programs.
I applied to all in florida too and heard nadda from them - i dunno if its a regional thing or what.

As for the rest, im sure you'll hear from them in laters waves of invites. Some of the big academics prob screen first waves with aoa and/or nasty step 1 scores i would assume.

I'd prob give it a week or two and if nothing else start calling and adding more programs.

I wondered this last year when I applied. In hindsight I think if you're getting interviews at all your reaches, you will be a good fit at most of those programs and will be safe if they make up most of your rank list. My experience is n=1 though.
