Any ideas on which campuses are in safer locations as far as theft/ violence/ crime/ etc. ? I've had some bad experiences at my undergrad schools, I'd like to not deal w/ that in pharm school as well.

Granted, I'll go anywhere accepted, regardless of the environment...
Just wondering

try UCSD. Avoid UOP.

LECOM E/B both have one entranced which is locked at all times, needing a security card to swipe you in with guards at the front entrance. I think thats pretty safe. 🙂

Out of all the campuses I've been to, I have to say that UCSD is the safest and nicest place. Probably I'm a bit biased because that is my alma mater. In general, it's safe like Irvine, but we do have a couple of cases of sexual assault at the apartments nearby campus.

Thanks! Good to hear about UCSD, I'm not a girl so I'm not to worried about sexual assult. Kinda surpised about UOP though, I didn't know it was a bad area. I don't think I'd like to go to a school that requires gaurds and a security card to get in. They must have had problems before...

I'm suprised you haven't heard about Stockton before. Not to scare you away from UOP but Stockton is Stockton. Just watch where you go, deffinatley avoid Bedlow St., and don't fill your apartment or car with nice things that you hang on to. Lived there for eight months and saw two shootings, friend's bike stolen, car window broken, and overtime found I couldn't go to sleep at night unless I heard some sort of siren. Got to love Stockton. http://spotcrime.com/ca/stockton

From what I saw of Stockton when I interviewed at UOP, it's pretty nasty until you get to the edges of the city. It's not a big city though. You can either stay on campus and be insulated from all the crap basically, or you can find a house/apartment a little bit off campus in the nicer part of town.

As far as living there beyond what you need to do for school, nobody would want to do that. But you'll only be up there for a little over 2 years...then off for your rotations and you're done.

Forbes Magazine placed Stockton as one of MOST dangerous cities in the US (along with the highest rates of car theft).

Haha...Fresno's no walk in the park either, so you calling Stockton crappy says a lot!

Yeah, Stockton is freakin' ghetto. Holy crap. It's as bad as Vallejo, I think. So most dangerous schools in California (based on city location) are: UOP, Touro, and USC.

Safest in CA: UCSD (woot La Jolla)

and on a random note, I laugh when people pronounce it "Luh-Joe-Luh" :meanie:

Look at the schools in the midwest...South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Wyoming, Iowa. I did my undergrad at South Dakota State and saw little crime in 4 years. Now I'm at Wyoming and haven't seen/heard of anything major happening here.

Also another most dangerous:

Temple because the medical school is in North Philly!!
Broad Street near Roosevelt Boulevard!!

The thing with Fresno is that the "bad parts" are very distinct...basically anything south of one major street here could potentially be bad, and anything north of it is pretty much guaranteed to be good. It's also expanding and there are some very, very rich, nice areas now. It's not at all what it used to be. The place where I live and the places I go...I'm not the least bit worried about any sort of crime. I like it actually.

Stockton though...it seemed run-down pretty much anywhere I saw when I was driving around. Granted, I didn't get to scope out the nicer areas, but it seemed like the whole town was sort of depressing. The good thing is I know a lot of people who went to UOP and nobody ever seemed to have a problem. And if you live on campus, there's really nothing to worry about unless you're not using common safety sense. 👍 I'm sure some students can vouch for this.

Yeah, I have lots of well off Fresno friends, kinda funny actually.

But the common sense thing is valid whether you go to UCSD or Temple in ghetto north philly. If you do stupid things like leave your car unlocked or doors unlocked, things are going to happen to you.

I hate idiots who are like, "Oh, I live in a nice area, I don't need to lock my doors." I mean...weren't things like cars invented in the 1920's? Last I checked, it's pretty easy for a thief to procure one. 🙄

Thats what I'm looking for! Schools all over, not just Cali. Back east would be cool..

You don't want to go to a school that has a security guard? I think all schools use security guards now, especially after the Virginia Tech incident.

However, I'd prefer a school that uses armed security guards.
Guards are awesome! The reason they are there probably isn't. Thats why I said that

Ya, I don't expect to find anywhere in the U.S. a place were you can leave your keys in the car and not expect your car to disappear or house doors unlocked and not expect people to be curious. Just looking genearlly for safety...

UB is in Amherst, NY. Amherst was named the safest city in America a few years ago. I think it's dropped to about 3rd or 4th. But regardless..it's really safe!!

I had my interview last year for UOP in Stockton. I was parking my car at the nearest shopping center close to the school in my rental car and eating my lunch before the interview. I saw some thugs walking across the parking lot checking inside the windows of cars as they walk by. No wonder Stockton is number 2 in car thefts behind Las Vegas.

general rules of thumb:

suburbs over cities
--> also, be aware that crime is inflated around campuses due to things like petty theft/sexual assault (ie date rape) that are naturally associated with hordes of horny co-eds.

professional schools only vs. undergrad + grad

Also, each campus is mandated by the Clery Act to publish crime statistics for campus + immediate vicinity. Don't get lost in the numbers though, actually talk to students to get a feel for things.

UF, LECOM, Nova are fairly safe.

It wouldn't hurt to look into the Concealed Weapons Permit laws regarding whichever state your planning on attending Rx school. Most northern states are pretty strict on allowing law-bidding citizens the opportunity to defend themselves, you have to cut through a lot of red tape(chicago, ny, philly, etc.) But, the majority of southern states have pretty fair laws and practices.

If your going to be living off campus, you'll feel a lot more comfortable being able to carry a concealed weapon legally(gun, knife, taser, etc).

Here in Florida the laws are pretty lax, and most criminals/thugs think twice before doing something stupid. Their has been many cases of citizens turning the tables on their assailant.👍 I for one conceal carry a pistol when I am out and about, the world is just too crazy of a place nowadays. Safety and practice is the name of the game when engaging in concealed carry.

Just some food for thought.

If its a big concern for you I'd look at finding a pharmacy school in a smaller city in a more low key area of the country. For instance how dangerous can North and South Dakota campuses be? I'm sure you can find some statistics about this on the internet for safest cities as well and check their crime statistics against the college locations you are interested in.

Answer: Not very. Brookings itself only has less than 20,000 people living in it...things do not really get out of hand much with the exception of the occassional drunk.

Where in the hell do you live where you feel the need to carry a gun. I've been around ghetto parts of St. Louis and never felt like I needed a gun. I live around some rednecks who carry guns with permits....but thats just cause they're rednecks (no offense to rednecks).

What about East Saint? Do you feel safe there? or Cahokia?

Why in the world would any pharmacy student be in E. St. Louis. strip clubs maybe...but those are fairly safe. Carrying a gun would only get you shot.

MWU CCP...gated campus in a very rich suburb of Chicago. All doors are locked and a ID card is needed to get in.

I'd love to be able to carry a gun but the NYC government is borderline tyrannical and doesn't want their citizens armed.

PS: One of my favorite movies is Death Wish.

I just keep a box cutter with me

There is no such thing as a safe pharmacy or any kind of school for that matter. You can get whacked at just about anywhere, remember Vtech massacre? Just live life to the fullest and be happy you're still alive.

Hell, that's easy...

North Dakota State
Idaho State
Appalachia
Shenandoah
Wyoming
Montana
Ohio Northern
Rhode Island
West Virginia...unless you're a couch...

Kingston, RI is like 30 minutes to Providence...1.5 hours to Boston....Ada, OH is kinda close to Columbus...Morgantown, WV is 55 min from Pittsburgh.

The others are smack dab in the middle of nowhere...and as safe as can be. More out of process of elimination that anything else...eliminate the people...eliminate the crime...

Why wouldn't you want the ability to protect yourself? It's 2009, the economy is shaky at best, people are getting wackier by the day. Unfortunately, no place is safe anymore. I have seen my fair share of crazy whackos in Orlando, and I am not willing to take my chances. Every numbnut looking for a fix is packing heat, and it's about time your average law-biding citizen fought back. I live and work in the better areas of Orlando too.

I for one love the fact that I have the ability to be able to carry a gun (with a concealed permit + proper training of course). I go to the range on a monthly basis and I have multiple police/sherriff friends who I keep up with. If some hopped up dude tries to rob me, he's getting 3 in the chest and an ambulance ride.

Guns are not something to be afraid of...they don't kill...people do. You can kill someone with a tennis shoe if you try hard enough. If your level headed, have proper training and respect for your weapon...your better off in the long run. I have no desire to shoot someone, but if they are putting my life, my families life or another citizens life in danger...I have no problem doing so.

Criminals aren't scared of your average citizen, and that is a problem.

Yeah. I live there. I go outside, start my car up, let it run for 20 minutes unattended, hasn't been stolen yet. And I leave my place unlocked all the time. Just because it slips my mind. My neighbors are insane hilljacks that would probably just shoot an intruder for me, anyway. My shed had had a broken lock on it for 2 years...nothing has been stolen to date.

Of course, I own a Mossberg 500 and an AR-15 and have NRA stickers on my windows...maybe that's why a theoretical burglar doesn't step...

Lol. The scariest campus...EVER. You'll see dudes runnin' re-ups in SUVs to corner slingers and crack heads running through for their fix with a cup full of change and a handful of 1s...across the street from the damned campus. But, hey, go down like 15 blocks and east on Spring Garden St and you're at Dave and Buster's...

hahah...I was walking around there once and heard someone blasting Kanye West on some speaker system.

That speaker system was an ambulance.

Everyone I know at Temple lives nowhere NEAR campus. There were a few home invasion robberies on student apartments a few months ago.

Come down to OKlahoma! OU or SWOSU. 🙂

Plus: SWOSU accepts students summer, fall and spring!

Thanks for the school! I'm trying to figure out where to apply to outside of CA, but i haven't really been anywhere else besides AZ and NV. I didn't want to apply to a school and spend the money on an interview just to find out I didn't like the area. A few of the schools listed are shown on AACP to have a tuition less then 25K/year, even better1!

There are such places... most southwestern suburbs of Omaha, NE for example. 😛 Though area around UNMC is not bad (well, not very nice by Omaha standards, but safe by any other), Creighton a mile up the street is somewhat worse. But being from California you have no chance of getting into UNMC and Creighton is pretty expensive... lots of California and Hawaii students there, though.

My small town in Central NJ is also pretty safe... and close to Rutgers pharmacy school. 😀

University of Wyoming is rated the 2nd safest campus in america. On our tour the guide said with in the last year the only criminal act was a stolen bike.

university of appalachia...mainly because theres no one else around.

and if people wanted to ransack the old high school building that its in...they already have.

general rules of thumb:

suburbs over cities

then again, Mercer is near the city, but is really secluded by dense forest from the surrounding town, which makes it a little safer.

For the most part, you'll be in 1 classroom in the same pharmacy building the whole time.

hah hah. Yes - I remember how strict the security guys were when I interviewed at LECOM-Bradenton. 2 other people and I arrived 15 minutes early and the security guy was so strict that he made us wait outside of the building before he let us in. But yes, lecom-B is really safe and the surrounding town consists of golf courses, lavish retirement homes and shopping plazas.

on another note:

As for appalachia, the town's pretty safe crime-wise. However, there are natural dangers because the campus is located within a mountainous area. The roads are winding and narrow, I was scared on my drive there bc there were no guard rails and I almost drove into sheep.

If you're not a city person, I don't recommend you to look into schools like temple, LIU, touro, USC etc.
