I have two schools that I know I am very interested in and will be applying to. I am pretty sure I will get an interview invite just fine, but I am considering applying to a safety school or two just in case. However, if I am offered an interview at a school that is not my top choice how long do I have to decide if I will interview there? Can I wait until after I have heard something from the schools I am interested in? I don't mind going to an extra interview, but it is pretty hard financially. My other option would be to add the safety schools in later, but that lessens my chance of getting into them. Any suggestions on how to approach this?

In my experience, most schools let you choose a interview date in ~1 month's range. After the interview, it takes about 1 week for the school's decision to come out and you will need to make your decision within 2 weeks of your acceptance.
IAUPR accepted me without an interview, I guess you can try it if you wish to save some interview money. If you chose a later interview date and plan the interview trip early, it is possible to spend less than $400 for a trip (including flight + hotel + transportation + food).
Assuming you need full loan for opt schools (~200k), the cost of a interview trip is trivial to what you will be paying. I think it's a good experience to visit different schools and explore different cities. Maybe you will find your back up choices more desirable than your original target.

Wow, is it possible to be accepted without an interview? How did they let you know? Did they email you and said you don't need an interveiw because we already accepted you??

It generally isn't common practice to accept ppl without interviews, but they're certainly not going to drag you all the way out to PR for an interview. I knew a PR graduate who was contacted by her school to help conduct interviews in her area. So you may end up being able to do that as far as PR goes.
