I wonder if any of the medics in Australia could give me an idea of the salary of junior medical officers and registrars. I understand that when overtime is factored in, the salary is typically 25% higher than the award wage - is this correct? In the UK, for example, your wage can be anything from 20% above the award wage to double the award wage depending on your overtime commitment.

Ok, basic salary for a PGY1 in Australia would be around 35-38 k, however with the normal extra cover ( usually 1 evening a week plus one whole day in the week end in a fornight ie one Sat & Sun a month) it will come up to 50-55 k.

Then PGY2 , Registrar salary would be around 60 basic plus extra depending on how much overtime you do. The good thing is you are allowed to give/ take extra evenings or week ends in the same hospital so there is a lot of flexibility out side normal hours.

I'm in tassie now and the salary of the interns here with overtime is as high as 70K aussies...but tassie is the highest paid state. if you want to stay it's easier if you've graduated from tassie. Also if you go to a "rural" med school you have a better chance of getting a PR...
