I know this is out of the norm, but I was on dentaltown.com and noticed this doctor that limited his practice to endo. His site says that he does on average 1000 root canals a year. At an average of 1500.00 dollars a pop, that would equal about 1.5 million a year in production. 35% of that is 525,000 a year. That is alot of money. I thought that was amazing... I would love to be a dentist not just for the money, but it helps.

overhead is also much lower for endo, so more bang for the buck

Producing that much you would think that he would have a lot of staff right. No, he has four people in the office including himself!!! He also has a sweet Porshe.

yeah, materials for endo are dirt cheap, files cost like 50 cents a pop

I have seen overhead figures for endo that are more around 20-30%. From what I understand, a 70% net would be pretty reasonable for endo.

my friends brother is an endo and made over a mil last year

Here in Philly, endo is around $800-900. So your $1500 is a little high, BUT your overhead is a little high as well, so you would still probably make around 500k a year.

What city is this office in? That makes a difference too. If he's the only dentist in some smaller city/town, then of course he'd easily be making this kind of money.

Before you start going all-out for endo, remember that it's a competitive specialty to get in to, and a lot of people consider endo the most boring thing ever ever ever

I had to had a root canal this year and it was a little over 1500 dollars here. He lives in rual FL. Dang you guys are cheap up there.

The root canals run $800-900. If you get a crown, buildup, etc, etc, then it can easily jump up to $1500+. The endo would only do the endo then refer back to the gp. This is in PA, of course. I can't believe that you would pay $1500 for just endo. I need to move to Florida when I finish!!!!

i always thought it would be difficult for someone in endo to get that many patients b/c dentists are eager to perform that procedure themselves...why would a dentist recommend a patient to an endo?

i worked in an office where we referred to endo often

mainly they refer for calcified canals, curved or fused roots, etc. an endodontist has the tools and equipment to do these procedures whereas most gp don't. when a gp does a root canal, they are held to the same standard as an endodontist is by the law, so many gp's don't want that accountability

Endo is very profitable, but can be very tricky as well. I saw a picture of a #3 yesterday with 5 canals! So, as a gp you will probably keep your anterior endo and some of your posterior, but there are a lot of cases you should refer, or else you will spend 2 hours trying, and then refer when you have screwed up the case. You will be out the 2 hours with no money and the specialist will hate you, as you will prove to them that gp's just see them as mistake fixers.
