Question. For someone who gets into a categorical 1st year position after completing a prelim year, are you given the salary of a pgy1 (because you are re doing your intern year) or pgy2 (because it technically is your second year of residency)?

Thanks

I imagine this is institution dependent, and will depend on if it's at a new institution or the same one, but I'm betting you're going to get paid as a PGY1.

Nope, you get paid at your correct level so you should get a PGY2 salary at your new (categorical) institution. That’s why the salaries are listed as PGY level not “first year, second year” etc. At least this is what happens in my institution.

then the person would get paid as a PGY 1...since that is what they will be even if they are redoing the year.

I imagine most, if not all, programs would pay at the PGY1 level if you are starting as a categorical PGY1 at the new program.

I can see some programs paying the PGY2 salary if you did your pre-lim year at the same program, but I still think it would be a minority of programs.

Best advice is to ask. No one will be offended if you're trying to clarify you salary so you can budget. But if you don't want to ask, assume you'll get the lower salary.

All institutions I’ve been at pay at the designated PGY level regardless of how long you’ve been in training.

All the prelims I know that landed categorical internships the next year we’re still paid at the PGY1 level that next year.

As a fellow I’m a PGY8 but get paid as a PGY6 because general Surgery residency is 5 clinical years.

I guess it is institution dependent, then, because we would pay according to years of training. I had a faculty member in another specialty decide to complete a second residency, and we paid her as a PGY5 even though she started as a 2nd year resident.

I had done a prelim IM year before my EM residency (where prelim was not required). At least 15 years ago, Duke policy was for whatever PGY you were, even if you had not been at Duke before then (so, I got PGY-2 pay as an EM 1).

And, right now, I see @mcl 's post. Literacy is over-rated.

The placds I've been pays you based on the requirement for your position. Do a neurosurgery residency and start as a psych intern? You get paid as a pgy1 again. But that's just my two institutions.

So it's clearly institution dependent and should be asked of the specific institution in question. Case closed.
