SAT, Grades

Hi,

Does anyone think it's possible to be admitted to a post-bacc (respectable) program with a 600 math SAT score? (if the CR section is over 750)

Also, does anyone have experience with having been admitted with a low C in a math course on the high school transcript?

Thanks.

Depends on the rest of your grades/GPA and experience

I would say its definitely possible, given you have a strong background.

I actually posted a thread with almost the exact same question. I had 600M, 790V on the SAT. I was advised to take the GRE because my GPA is very good and my math score might stand out (and not in a good way!)

Were you interested in medical school or psychology? I wouldn't *think* a lackluster math score would be too much of a problem for psychology graduate programs...Am I mistaken?

Anyone else care to chime in?

My SAT scores were so-so (yay for terrible public high schools!) but I was invited to interview everywhere I applied - I'm guessing that was thanks to my high college GPA and healthcare volunteer experience?? I wouldn't worry too much if you have other strengths you can really play up.

I agree with other posters. My SAT scores were very low, I had some Cs in high school math and even failed some high school math classes (which I made up later and got As). I did really well in math in college though. I got into a bunch of schools and I think the main thing was I had a really unique SOP and some good clinical experience volunteering/shadowing doctors.

The school did question me about my poor earlier grades and I said that when I first started high school it was hard for me to adjust but as I got used to it, it got easier and so I did better later on.

The school accepted me but recommended I take some math prep courses at a JC on my own since they realized math could be a weakness for me. The schools also reassured me that many people who are bad at math in general still do well in the pre-med courses because for the most part the math you are doing in science is more applied to real situations rather than just straight number logic.

Thanks for the reassurance, everyone. Can I ask where you were admitted, Raconteur?

On the SAT I had a 710 Verbal and a 560 Math, and I was encouraged to take the GRE. If I remember correctly, I got a 670 Math and a 650 Verbal on the GRE, and I was accepted to Goucher. I would recommend that you take the GRE.

As far as high school transcripts go, I wouldn't worry about it. I had C's all over the place, and even some D's, but in undergrad, I got almost all A's. As long as you do well in undergrad, I don't think high school transcripts matter much at all.

Postbac premed programs (so medical school). It wasn't a problem when I thought I wanted to do a psych PhD, but now that this med school thing has come along into my life... 🙄

Wait post-baccs actually care about your high school grades and sat's? None of the ones I'm applying to even ask about them.

Some post bacs ask about SAT grades. I haven't heard much/any asking about HS grades.

Also OP - if you haven't figured this out in about a year, shouldn't you get on it? In that time, you could have contacted every post-bac in the country and asked on their requirements regarding this.

...isn't the SAT something you take in high school?

This should be completely irrelevant. Your college transcript should be what counts.

I'm a high school dropout and as long as I don't mention it, no one ever asks, since I have a BA degree. I'm also 28, so it seems like ancient history to me.

Postbacc programs are specifically designed for people who don't have a math/science background but who are motivated and have academic potential.
