SAT Scores?

What's the point of giving a medical school your SAT scores on a secondary application? If its optional, should I provide them? My scores weren't fantastic, combined 1290 overall. Any thoughts?

Who asks for SAT scores?? :scared:

I think WashU did. The general consensus seems to be that it's for research purposes and doesn't actually affect your application.

i think jefferson and one other school does too so far that ive sent... they say its for evaluating testing or something... maybe how well your performance then predicted your performance now.. who knows... 😕

Correct. I took the SAT so long ago, I can't order scores online, so I asked two schools that request it if its necessary and both said it isn't. I wouldn't sweat it.

I didn't know that a 1290 wasn't fantastic. OK maybe not fantastic, but isn't that at the very least great. What's the national average?

I took the SATs in 1999 and got a 1280 which is at least 90th percentile b/c it got me a job with Kaplan. Thus far, I remember providing my scores for Jefferson, I'm sure it's not a big deal so I wouldn't worry about it!

1290 is not even close to 90th percentile

LOL actually, it is. In 2000 (which is when I took the SAT) 1290 was the 89th percentile, so I would say that's pretty close  🙄

i stand corrected. 😎

i always thought 1290 was a very low score. 🙄

VCU asks for SAT scores on their secondary, as well.

I think nat'l average is around 1000. At least it was when we all took it. I have no idea what it is now that they added that writing section.

Why you found ironman's response more reputable than mine is beyond me but I know what I'm talking about...As aforementioned I work for Kaplan, I get paid to know these things. While I'm sure that the avgs for standardized tests continue to rise, upper 1200s are still very competitive.

It's Ricky Bobby, he has that kind of effect on people.

I figured that's what it was 😉

The new SAT has math, reading, and writing sections (including an essay). So it's out of 2400 instead of the old 1600. If you took the PSAT back then, which had all three sections minus the essay, and remember your selection index score (out of 240), it's comparable to the new SAT scores if you add a zero at the end. The national avg now per section is 600, so 1800 total.

Sorry, I teach TPR SAT, so this is stuff I spontaneously spew.

And yeah, I think I remember the national avg was around 1000 when the max was 1600.

the math section was the bane of my existence 750 verbal, 620 math

130 spread for the win. Thank god the mcat doesnt have one.

I think TMDSAS asks for SAT scores i think they wanna know to see like your trend on national exams to further predict MCAT USMLE/COMLEX

Yeah I'm undecided as to whether that'll hurt or help me. I did very well on the SAT and very well on the MCAT, but had relatively ****ty grades (compared to the rest of SDN anyway). So will they think- oh he's a ******* who just happens to be a good test taker- let's reject him, or will they say- you know, he may not have done so well in college, but he'll definitely rock the Boards, let's give him a chance?

i'm in the exact same situation wondering the same thing.

i've convinced myself that any private schools will look highly at a "good test taker" because their reported board scores are what get them funding.

(and don't tell me otherwise, people-- sometimes this is the only thing that gives me hope!! )

Actually it was recentered in the middle 90's to redefine 1000 as average.(Basically the idea was that 1000 previously was supposed to be average. So over the next few decades higher and higher percentages of students nation wide started taking the thing since more students were going on to college. So after decades of this the average had dropped to mid to low 400's and they recentered the test to make 1000 average.) Makes me wonder though, if I give my SAT which I took before the recentering I wonder if they give a place so I can mention it's the old test.(And apparently I get an extra 50pts or so 😀 )

I was wondering why they wanted them as well. my only thought was that they might use it to "rate" your undergrad. If they don't know the undergrad institution very well, they can look at your sat scores and kinda figure it out...

So lets say my SAT in high school wasn't that great and I would rather not make any mention of it ever... is this possible? 🙁

i dont know that much but i think it may be a red flag if your MCAT and SAT are terrible but good scores or an increase as compared to the national aveage can only help you i think its only a slight indication of your abilities to think in stressful situations

wow, i thought 90th percentile was around 1350... having it lower makes me feel more special!

too bad no schools im applying to have asked..

wow.. then i must have gotten like 110th percentile.... where can i find this data?

i wish i could substitute my SAT score for my MCAT score 🙁

if i didn't go to college in the states, can i withhold my SAT scores?
i went to university of toronto and i don't think it's "unknown"

is anything above 1200 good?
people in my lab got 1500+ and they complained becuz they were ridiculed by kids from their graduating class who got 1580, 1590
i didn't even tell them i got 1400 >_<

I think 1400 is around the 95th %ile, 1500 around the 99th.

Another thing we have in common. I worry about how med schools will view that too.

Well, you're already getting interviews, so apparently quite well. 😀

Oh yeah, and a 41 (or is it 42?) would make a 4.0 look sub-par. So don't sweat it...

It seems to me like some people are using this thread to boast about various scores, either outrightly or subtly. I don't think the OP actually asked how you did on the SAT. If you must boast, please keep it to your MCAT. Talking about your genius SAT results and how you didn't study one bit is so freshman year of undergrad. You may as well disclose your IQ scores, or tell us about how you mastered differential topology as a 10 year old.

Penn St. secondary asks as well (but it's optional).

So I don't know what this means. Will they look disfavorably at someone who did not send it? I sent mine mostly for this reason.

Also, can you send the highest score from each section (as I took it three times)? I did, but there is only a 10 point difference.

I did horrible on my SAT's. Will this keep me out of med schools, even if I score excellent on the MCAT?

Ack! SAT's don't count for $hit once you get in to college. Anyone over the age of 20 who can still recite their SAT score without picking their brain is the nerd equivalent of college guys who bore you to death with stories of high school football glory.

Calvin/Hobbes- No one cares what you got on your SAT. Not adcoms and not most fellow students.

yeah same here 800 math, 600 verbal...kinda an awkward score, so i always put 1400 composite when i can instead of the breakdown...

i too work for kaplan, i believe 90th percentile now is 1320...

I still remember it because my high school counselor said it was the highest in the class... so it made me feel special 😳 Not like I did anything with it though, only applied to my state school and got in... I was too much of a pothead at that point to write any essays or take the SAT II's

I'm glad I'll have a chance to feel special again, though 😉

Agreed. When I took it in '94 1000 was considered average. If they have changed to a new scoring system in recent years I have no idea. But to say 1290 is not good is crazy. I was considered above average with an 1120 (nothing to really brag about, but not bad either).
