Dr. Sanjay Gupta Reports "Saving Gabby Giffords"

Anyone else watch this today? I watched it and they reported a lot about her rehabilitation process in the Houston Rehab Hospital. They did a walkthrough of some of the exercises she is performing, activities, etc. It's really amazing how fast she is recovering from her gunshot wound to her brain! The only thing I didn't like about the show was that they did not mention physical nor occupational therapy; rather they mentioned music therapy and speech therapy. When they did talk about the people responsible for her rehabilitation process, they said "Doctors and Staff" hmmmmm.......thoughts?

It's great to get an update on her progress with rehabilitation! I didn't see this yet though. But that's why I always get so excited when an article or tv show DOES actually mention a physical therapist!

That's really a shame that they couldn't have mentioned any PT or OTs and instead said "doctors and staff" -- the PTs and OTs are the ones who are going to bring her back, and they have done an INCREDIBLE job so far!

This is surely a great story for PT/OT exposure and it's a shame they didn't outright mention all the wonderful therapists that are working with her!

I'll believe she's doing well, whatever that's supposed to mean, when I see her interviewed.

🙁

Thank you for posting that video! Im glad he went into more detail during his interview with Anderson Cooper! At least he mentioned occupational therapy, hahaha! I also noticed that in the text it does mention a physical therapist (Julie Welch).

What I found really interesting at the end of that interview with Anderson cooper was that Dr. Gupta seemed very thrilled and surprised at how in depth therapy treatments are! He even mentions that he learned a lot from his walkthrough in the Rehab Facility. But it is quite sad that some doctors are clueless as to what we CAN do for a patient.

its possible or even likely, that the SLP involved has had much much more to do with her recovery. I see people with neurological injuries (TBI, CVA) who have little, if any motor problems but they do have significant memory, cognitive, or speech problems.

Before you go off, learn about the case.

Oh, I don't doubt that at all.

I agree with this markel. I think it is going to be up to current, and future, PT's and OT's to "toot their own horns". We need more video's made, we need more press, we need more education at events such as Health Fairs. The public needs, for our benefit, to know that we are more than "personal trainers", which is what many seem to think. We will have to fight for our credibility.

John, we also have to make sure that those who seek the attention are credible. There are plenty of "hummers" and straight leg raise/short arc quad, massage only PTs out there. It is up to the educated and up-to-date PTs to be recognized.
