So I am starting to think about buying books for my rotations which will be starting soon, such as the Recall series, BluePrints, Appleton and Lange. I would like to save some money and I am wondering is it necessary to buy the newer editions or can I get away with buying older editions from the mid -late 90s? Any insight on how the newer editions compare to older versions would be appreciated. I assuming these books cover basic clinical/surgical information, have things changed that significantly in the last 10 years?

Buy all the books you want and resell them on Amazon or Half.com when you are done. If you don't mark in them and keep them in good condition you can get back 85% of your money....if your bookstore offers yearly rebates you might even make a little money in the end.

The things that might change are pharmacology and epidemiology. Especially for things like psych.

One thing that has worked well for me is get a group together and each buy the books for one or two rotations and then share them. I did this informally and I only ended up purchasing books for surgery. I just borrowed the rest. That way you can get a review book and a question book and even a pocket book if you want and not feel too bad about it.

As for selling things on half.com, I have SO many books sitting in boxes in my room that need to be put on the internet all the way from first year. If you have the stamina to list them, email back the buyers and get them shipped to the buyer on time, go for it!

Stamina? It takes less than 10 seconds to list a book (all you have to do is search for the book and click the "sell mine" button.) You dont have to email or converse with the buyer in anyway, and most hospitals have a post office so you dont even have to go out of the way to ship them. I made $1200 in 3 days selling my books from 1st and 2nd year.

I have spend the same $200 all year. I sell the books from the last rotation and use the money to buy the books for the new rotation!
