Instead of working out, I get dressed in my work out clothes, and then I fall asleep. I look like I'm working out, and I get some rest.

Any other novel ways to save time in med school?

I open my textbook to the page the lecture pertains to, then log on to SDN.

It's "study Doctor Network"...

you can save a lot of time by not eating.

besides, it's the "in" thing now to look cachectic. Very chic and hot. Sexxxxy.

If your collar bones aren't protruding like a decomposed corpse, well, then, you're just too fat.

so yeah, try manorexia

You can get similar great time saving ideas from one of the characters (Hines) in the recently revitalized Broadway show "Pajama Game". The pertinent lyrics are:

"When i go to sleep, I don't undress.
That's right, I sleep in all my clothes.
I must confess.
Sure it's a strange way to behave.
And I will admit that the suit gets mussed and it gathers lint and it picks up dust,
but think of the time I save.

Girls:
Think of the time he saves.

Hines:
The alarm clock rings, it's 6 AM.
And then right there in bed I shave.
That's what I said. while I am still in bed, I shave.
And the lather drips and the bed gets wet and oh what a lousy shave I get,
But think of the time I save.

Girls:
Think of the time he saves.

Hines:
At breakfast time, I grab a bowl.
And in the bowl I drop an egg, and add some juice.
A poor excuse for what I crave.
And then I add some oatmeal too and it comes out tasting just like glue,
But think of the time I save.

Girls:
Think of the time he saves.

Hines:
I'll be sitting counting seconds til the day I die.
And when I do, I have a plan.
Before I'm dead, I'll dig my grave.
That's what I said. Before I'm dead I'll dig my grave.
'Cuz when St. Peter calls my name,
I know I'll get there just the same but think of the time I'll save."

Ah the Pajama Game. I thought I was the only one under 60 who knew and/or liked it. I was so sad to see the revival closed on Broadway before I could get up there.

If you dated a medstudent you could talk dirty in anatomical terms...

"oh yeah baby, flex my process"

Do light studying with cardio. Then you can actually work out, plus learn a bit. Not a very insightful suggestion, but it makes me feel good doing it. I haven't regressed to studying in between sets though.

I read or study on the john without fail. No phone calls though, as I'm wary of air quality.

I shave on the way to school. When I had a job, I shaved in the car; now that I'm taking the bus to school, I shave at the bus stop. I also eat breakfast at the bus stop, and study during the ride.

My brother dropped his cell phone in the toilet once (accidentally). That's another reason to think twice about making calls on the john....

Back in 1st year, it was common to see our class president brush his teeth on his way to class. That's what I call efficient time management👍

I'm just happy to see someone referencing a musical. I always censor myself and leave my theatre references for my friends outside of med school 😛

maximize all your rest time. instead of just watching tv, watch TV at the gym while you are on a bike or treadmill. when you eat, put on Goljian audio path. make sure that you get enough sleep so that you will absorb the maximum amount of info per hr studied (less sleep = slower understanding, absorption).

Hi,

I'm a mother of 3 and I'm a prof for University of Maryland distance education (flexible hours).

Here's my tips:
1. I have a giant whiteboard in the kitchen some kind of diagram that needs to be memorized. It 'seeps' into my brain while I cook, clean, walk through the room etc.
2. I always take a few photcopied pages from one of the heavier texts with me to review/study while waiting for the bus, riding in the car or generally while sitting with friends for coffee. (I study with lots of Greeks, so coffee time is significant). I also look at these while trapped in a useless lecture.
3. Drill math homework, thinking problems etc. with kids while they are in bath/car.
4. Have Goljan on my MP3 player for when I'm 'mobile'
5. Have Kaplan and Goljan on CD's in my car.
6. Study a systems-based approach. Seems more efficient somehow after having done each subject separately.
7. Start laundry in morning, then leave, then re-visit when you come home at the end of the day.
8. Cook for the month and freeze it. Chile, spaghetti sauce, stews, soups, and some casserole's work well. Take a Saturday and just cook and chop and bag it.
9. Take it one day at a time.
10. It's all about balance and perseverance.

That's it. S-

I strategically placed post it notes throughout my bedroom, closet, and bathroom of stuff I commonly forgot while studying for step I. The image of the steroid metabolism pathway on the wall behind my toilet will forever be burnt into my brain...

*sheepishly raises hand* guilty as charged your honour.

I also read while...erm...on the potty. Don't talk on the telephone though, I don't like other people to know that I actually use the bathroom. I like them to 1) never see me eat 2) never see me use the potty and 3) never see me sleep. It's part of my Orthonut/ex Army voodoo majick mindgames.

Everybody reads on the potty. This was actually one of the arguments used in a library I worked in when we finally decided to let people bring drinks into the library. We know patrons check out these books and read them on the potty, so what do we care if they have a covered cup of coffee next to them in the library?

You people who can knock back a chapter of Robbins on the pot seriously need to add some fiber to your diet.

Take care of business. Get in. Get out. End of story. 😛

Amen. Ten hours per chapter equals "Applecore colon". See a doc.

My only technique:

I ride my bike 10 miles to school every day (almost). DC traffic takes 35 minutes to go 6.5 miles. The 10 mile route takes me 35 minutes on my bike. Saves cash (no gas), saves time (work out/commute simultaneously), and my legs look goooooooood!

I make up for my efficiency on SDN, so I think I'm breaking even.

I started this thread as a joke, but really appreciate your tips. I'm a father of two, so I can imagine how difficult this is for you.

Good luck - and thanks to everyone for posting!
