I just saw a patient with raging scabies and now I'm freaking out that I have it! I did a pretty thorough skin exam but I didn't like rub up all over her or anything. What are the chances of actually getting it from a patient? Ugh!!

Easy there, unless you rubbed yourself skin to skin all over the patient you will be just fine.

Having said that, I had it years ago as a youngling, and it is no fun at all.

You'll be fine, I'm sure you were sufficiently protected. I freaked out a little too at this 20 year old guy who had been road tripping, but he said his best friend managed to avoid it so I figured I was fine. It's way worse for your patient, but hopefully you helped fix that 🙂

The mites can jump several feet. It's unlikely you will catch it, but there is a possibility.

I always want to scratch my skin off after seeing someone with scabies. Gives me the heebie jeebies!

Just the mere mention of that word makes me itch!

why didnt you wear gloves?

the mite that causes scabies cannot jump or fly. if you wear gloves and dont have any contact with the patient or exam bed beyond your gloved hand, you are safe. If you touched the patient with your hands ungloved (why would you do that? ?) then it is unlikely to have transmitted with brief contact (requires pretty prolonged contact) but of course it is not impossible

if you are that worried, treat yourself with permethrin for a night.
