Scary... Last year's waitlist post

I did a search and came up with last year's waitlist posts. Wow, how horrible it was
to read this post from last year. Some people never got off of it and some
people got off of it at the end of July. That is really scary to those of us who have
families(kids in school) and own homes and have spouses who would need to find a
new job in the new location. If I clear a waitlist in late July I would have to turn them
down. I just couldn't move that fast.

Even our famous administrator (Lilycat) went through the waitlist nightmare.

I don't know why I'm especially feeling pessimistic today...yikes, I can't help but keep thinking I will be riding the same boat as those unfortunate folks who'd never made off the waitlist. meow. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

Yeah, I was waitlisted at NYMC last year, and although usually 40+ students come off the list, only two or three did in the end, and I believe they were special cases. It was a very difficult time for most of us.

I, too, have family and kids, and we were on edge the whole time not knowing what to do if I got off.

I pray this won't happen again this year!

if they took you off the waitlist really late, can you apply for a deferment?

Waitlist experiences are not all horrible. I was on three waitlists (two regular, one high) got off one immediately like the third week in March and since it was a great school, though probably the second choice of the three possible waitlists,) I accepted because by that time I was sick of the whole process. I am happy now! Also though its hard to wait until July if you have plans you can often "move up " if you have several chilces. Some schools will let you defer if they accept you late but usually by that time you have been telling them how much you want to go there and get off the waitlist---so they won't let you defer. In short, wait lists are a good sign.

Well I just finished reading all 20 pages of the old wait list thread, and I am both worried and excited. My eyes are burning from staring at my computer, so I'll sum up what I learned for those of you who don't have time to read it:

* Many people come off of wait lists in July
* Many people on wait lists are already accepted at another school, yet they'd rather not go there
* To increase your chances of getting off of it, write the adcoms and tell them how wonderful you are
* It is hard to defer when accepted off of a wait list
*For many people, once they got off of one wait list, many other offers started pouring in like a chain reaction
*I also learned that a lot of people end up in top tier schools off of the waitlist, but I did not see a lot of movement from the 2nd tier schools, especially from the schools I'm applying to 🙁

What makes it better is that he knew that orientation had started b/c he had friends in the class. They basically said "we have a spot, do you want it?" and then let him defer.

Road block on the highway to Heaven: If you are granted a deferment after an acceptance, AMCAS rules prevent you from reapplying elsewhere during the following academic year, if that is what is in your mind. AMCAS gets all this kind of data from the medical schools and tracks it.
