Ok, so I'm looking forward to hearing from NYU post-interview and was today browsing through the interview feedback section for NYU. I was shocked to run across a (mildly put) scathing review a current student gave about his/her experience at NYU: http://www.studentdoctor.net/interview/show_entry.asp?ID=5566

I had a positive experience at the school when I interviewed there, but now feel like I could've had the wool pulled over my eyes if the administration and faculty are truly as unsupportive as this student claims. Anybody know how much truth exists in the above review? Any current students know what's going on? I really want to like NYU so it would be heartening if someone could shed some light on these comments.

i wonder if there is a chance that this is a gunner that is low on hope and trying to push other acceptees to decline NYU to give him/her a better chance of being accepted.

interview feedback is completely anonymous and threads aren't exactly so this would be a good venue to do so.

i think the testimonials of all the students in person is more reliable than this single neg feedback. the students weren't gaining anything by saying the oposite of this post.

I pmed you Flash.

Hmm this is interesting. A similar kind of attack was made on Michigan in Interview feedback by a current student as well. U Mich is a school I'm interested in and I'm an out of stater, so this review was unnerving.... but then again, grain of salt since its the net and other people's experiences will inevitably be different?

It was debated in this Allo thread.: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=95190

Any other school feedback containing these kinds of critiques? It's a bit suspect if more of these pop up under other schools.

Yeah, I haven't excluded the idea that the feedback could've been by an applicant hoping for an interview late in the game or even by a current NYU student who's disgruntled because he just bombed his anatomy exam. The students I talked to at NYU seemed quite happy, so I'm not too worried about that aspect of the feedback at all. I'm more interested in hearing the opinion of someone with a more intimate knowledge of NYU about its med faculty and staff, and the provided learning enviornment. I'm definitely not naively assuming that the post was 100% sincere. I just hope sdn'ers aren't that vile.

Thanks for the pm, Kash. 🙂

I actually saw that review before I interviewed at NYU and I kinda brought it up with one of my student tour guides since it was just me and him at the time...

While he didn't make it sound so miserable or completely unbearable at NYU, he did concur that in his opinion some of those points were valid. The pass/fail thing is a bit of a mystique at most schools, including NYU, since they do keep grades in order to rank you. Also, he mentioned that much of the administration and faculty was very laissez-faire in terms of approaching things so I can see evidence for where the reviewer came up with that.

Ya got me. Sounds like a disgruntled student to me. This makes me nervous because I had actually put NYU ahead of Columbia in my mind.

that was a rather amusing review to read. i will tell you that i have heard students say the same exact thing about a dozen other schools. there are people that will ALWAYS feel like this, especially at very large institutions such as NYU, Columbia, Cornell, et al.

go with your interview vibe and stick to that. use material from that review as fodder for questions -- i always loved throwing off interviewers when I asked questions about dirty laundry.

Sometimes I wish someone created a disgruntledmedstudents.com website. The problem with interview days is that adcoms cherry pick the people whom you meet. Obviously, not everyone is happy at X med school and it seems as though you don't really get a complete pictures of what is going on at X medical school during your interview day.
