hi,
Does anyone know the minumim GPA requirement for SCCO? I know they are very competitive, but my GPA is aweful (2.3 for my university and around 2.6 with all my lower division transfer courses from community colleges....im still a work in progress though!im still doing my undergrad and wont be graduating until spring 2007. does anyone have any suggestions on who to contact for information that would help me with addmissions when i do apply? i still have to take the OATs. Also, what is the difference between cumulative gpa and the pre-req gpa. does it make a big difference if your cum. gpa is way below a 3.0 but your pre-req gpa is very good? also, is there a minimum experience time? as in, how long is volunteer/working/getting experience in opt. offices/extra currics. sufficient enough?

The prerequites are very important, how is ur GPA with those classes? I'm not totally sure about a min GPA for applying to SCCO (should be on website) but I know that some schools will allow you to replace grades (specifically required classes) in order to let you to be more competitive. I think PCO, and SCO does that but don't quote me if i'm wrong! In that case they will look more toward the required classes then the over GPA if you were to retake the classes. For some people (including me) it's like a second chance.

I have a feeling that your GPA isn't very competitive for SCCO because so many people want to go to school there and either you would need a whole lot of experience shadowing/working for a OD or killer OAT scores if you didn't retake any classes. If you aren't going to graduate til spring 2007 then make sure the rest of your grades are really good. If you have to take some time off to retake classes then do it, it can do a world of difference when you do end up applying. Just my opinion, good luck!

your gpa isn't competitive enough for most OD schools. some might grant you an interview if you have an OAT of 400. I would retake the courses you got C's,D's, and especially F's. Most schools require a reference letter from an OD, so you do have to volunteer/work in optometric settings. You need superb activities and involvement to compensate for the low gpa.

is there a reason for your low gpa? (Health? Family?) You might want to consider a back-up plan.
