I can not find hardly any scholarships for first year vet student.

That’s because, unless you explicitly get offered one from the school, there really aren’t any... at least not for incoming students.

From what I've seen, a handful of vet schools will distribute recruitment scholarships to the top X% of admitted students, but those schools tend to be the more expensive ones, anyway. I'm pretty sure that Penn does, for example. Others will send admitted students a list of scholarships that they can apply for over the summer. But most don't start offering them until at least partway through first year, rather than at the start, and some schools are more generous than others in this regard.

It is very much school-dependent---where are you attending?

Also, keep in mind that scholarships in vet school aren't like those in undergrad. The overwhelming majority offer anywhere from a few hundred to maybe a couple thousand dollars at the most. There are exceptions, of course, and everything helps, but for the most part, vet school scholarships are a drop in a bucket and most students (at least at my former school, as an example) don't receive a single one. They may cover a chunk of your living costs but won't make so much as a dent in tuition. Full rides are virtually nonexistent.

At Oregon, we get offered the chance to apply for scholarships halfway through first year to be used for second year and beyond. A lot of people get at least one, and a few 3rd/4th year applicants were offered 5+ scholarships from the school, covering the majority (if not all) of their tuition for the year). You can also make a massive dent in tuition by applying to external scholarships that aren't specific to vet school. You'll have to apply to a lot of them and write great essays, but that's an option that is underutilized by pretty much all vet students.

I was wondering if you could expand a little on the external scholarships and how you go about finding them. Is this something that is only available to students currently attending vet school or could I apply even though I will only be starting next fall?
Thank you!!

My school does recruitment scholarships for first year, then students can apply for UMN specific scholarships during the year for use during second year and beyond. (We get an email about this during the spring) My school does put together a list of other relevant scholarships- most of them are super specific to a state or interest, and there are few for first years, but they are always worth looking into. I think UMN lists it under financial aid or something, so you might be able to look on your school's page and see if they do something similar.
The American Veterinary Medical Foundation does scholarships every year and they have them for all years. There's a Minnesota-specific VMF that gives out scholarships, so I would check your state and see if they have the same.

Generally you can try to search for scholarships from animal or veterinary-related associations- there are some about human-animal bond, behavior, etc.
There are also very broad scholarships for any student studying anything, but those will be highly competitive so you have to consider if you think it will be worth your time.

If you aren't attending yet it will be difficult to find a whole lot you can apply for right now- some will let you apply in fall with a "letter of good standing" instead of grades, which we could get from our Academic and Student Affairs office

Type inurl:external-scholarship or inurl😳utside-scholarship into Google. This pulls up a list of essentially all the external scholarship pages from hundreds of universities. Pick one you like and go through the scholarships from random law firms and stuff. I got a few first year from insurance companies and stuff like that, that weren't specific to vet students. It takes sifting through a lot of crap but you can find some really good ones with only a few applicants.

RVC is the only school I've heard of that offers a substantial vet med scholarship. it's one full ride to one of their top international candidates. none of the other schools I've applied to have mentioned scholarships but my provincial school does offer small ones to returning students.

Hi SnowJ,

Weird to revive a very old discussion🤣 But I've not been able to find more info on recruitment scholarship from UMN. Would you mind sharing approximately how much that is (like, does it even remotely bring down OOS tuition to IS similar level), and when the selected students usually hear about the offer? Thx!!

I am in-state and never got a recruitment scholarship myself, so I don't really know much about them other than that they exist

To piggyback on that, I never heard of any of my classmates receiving a recruitment scholarship from UMN... not that it means they don't exist but I definitely wouldn't count on it.
