Has anyone in here been offered a full ride to dental school, or had some of their tuition paid off? Any grants? What were your steps and how did you do it? What did they look for?

I have a classmate that was offered a scholarship at NYU that would have covered all his tuition and school costs. It didn't cover living expenses however, so after crunching the numbers including out of state tuition cost for his wife to transfer to a college out there, it turned out not to be that much of a better deal. He had pretty high grades, 3.75 or so from UCSD and a 23+ DAT, plus he had been working in research for about 7 years. He thinks NYU offered him the scholarship mainly for the research experience because NYU is trying to expand that part of their school. Probably a major reason they have Bertolami as the new dean.

UOP also offers a small scholarship, from $30k to $60k, distributed evenly over the whole 3 years. From what I can tell, it's based mainly on DAT score and GPA. You'll need at least a 23 on the DAT and the higher your GPA, the more money you get. You also need to have applied early. There's a limited pool of money, so they offer it to their early top candidates. This scholarship is offered at the same time as when you get your acceptance, to try and lure you to the school.

Hey thanks. So if I try to keep up my GPA and DAT scores do you think I have a good chance of getting a scholarship. How would you apply and when would be a good year to do it?

Tufts offers a merit scholarship but its only 6,000 per year for four years (provided that you stay in the top 20% of the class). Usually need to be 3.5+ and 23+ for that one

Penn's Dean's Scholarship is worth half tuition, but you need probabaly a 26 (maybe a 25) and 3.8+. See the user jcferrero on predents.comfrom the 2005-2006 cycle, he went there with the dean's scholarship.

alright, i'll check it out. Do you know anyone who received a scholarship for UMDNJ?

UC regents scholarship gives you a full ride for free, which is really great
I remember ucsf gave tons of money like UC grants, scholarships, etc....Money from who know where that I came out owing about 70 grand. Which is amazing this day and age.
The thing with UCSF is that they do not announce anything beside uc regent scholar, dean scholar, or kellogg scholar at acceptance. In may or june, after they have a class, they meet for scholarship award then it is announced. I do not usually know how much I ended borrowing until I receive financial aid package. But at least they give me 20G per year. This depends on your financial situation, your state residency, etc...It is not a certain thing. But if you want to keep the cost down, attend public school is a way to go, unless you get an offer from upenn or uop, forget it.
I received scholarship offered from uop too, but even with that scholarship, it is nothing compare with the bargain price at ucsf, so I attended UC, it turned out to be a very good investment.
