Do vet schools ever give out scholarships to OOS students? Do they notify you of these before you have do decide which school you're going to? I'm aware of some government related scholarships, but since I'm interested in small animals a lot of those don't really apply to me. I'm starting to get a little worried about really wanting to go to an OOS school but not being able to justify the increased cost. One vet I met mentioned that she knew some people who got scholarships granting OOS students IS tuition...do they still do that at any schools?

I believe Tufts has a few that come from outside sources but I'm not entirely sure how you go about applying for them and how amazing of an applicant you have to be to get them. A lot of the scholarships also only pertain to students once past their first year.

Penn gives out "recruitment scholarships" from their own budget and organizes "opportunity scholarships" with private donors (typically alumni). The opportunity scholarships are often limited by region (i.e. $xxx to a student from County YY with an interest in zz). The recruitment scholarships have a firm GPA/GRE cutoff which varies by year (and which I missed by about 2 percentile points, but no, I'm not bitter. 😎) I don't think it matters for that one where you hail from. Of course, even if you were somehow awarded both of these together, Penn is still one of the most expensive OOS options.

We don't fill out our general scholarship application until we're already in school. It's usually due sometime in October, I believe. We haven't heard back yet though. A lot of the ones on that application do apparently like in-state students because they do ask you what county you're from, etc. but out of state students are eligible for some of them (though we don't actually see what the individual scholarships are).

I also got an email from a chapter of the alumni association from my (out of state) home town telling me about a scholarship for students at UW who graduated from high school in the area where I grew up - not sure how they got my information, but you can bet that I applied for that right away. Fingers crossed that there aren't too many other students from the SF Bay Area attending the U of Wisconsin right now!

I can speak to only a few of the schools, but I know that Wisconsin does have a limited number of "recruitment" dollars they use for OOS students. When I was accepted they paid for my trip out to their accepted-student weekend and offered me a scholarship of a few thousand dollars for the first year to go there. Missouri also has a scholarship fund and every student has the chance to apply for a host of them using a common application form that you receive soon after you are accepted. I was an IS student for Penn (so I'm not sure if this applies to OOS applicants) but was offered a $5,000/year scholarship as long as grades were maintained above a 3.5 during school. Not sure if these offers can be more or less than this value. And I haven't gotten any school-related scholarships from NC State but have gotten several state grants and a private scholarship this year as an OOS student. We fill out a common scholarship app each spring and are automatically entered into the pool of available money. Keep in mind that while all these are great and helpful, they aren't full or half-rides to these places. They provide a bit more ease with living expenses but don't much cut into the huge numbers of loans needed to go to school. So, they're out there for sure but I couldn't really tell you what "qualifies" you and what doesn't. Being OOS can help or hurt for different scholarships, same as being SA-focused; each fund has different requirements of the students who receive it.

I was offered $10,000/year recruitment scholarship to both Penn and Ohio State. I think I need to maintain above a 3.2 GPA but it might be 3.5. Penn actually offered the scholarship first with my acceptance letter, and then a woman from Ohio State's admissions office called me a week or two later (after I had already mailed my decline) to offer me the same amount of money. I know one other person offered this scholarship who was accepted to Cornell, Tufts, and Penn (and ultimately chose Penn). I guess the point of the story is can other schools see if/how much one school is offering you?

Ohio gave you scholarship after you mailed your decline?? So would you think it would be worthwhile to call schools and ask about scholarships? I have heard of people doing this but I always kind of figured that if they had anything to offer they would offer it without being asked haha.

Just out of curiosity, were you IS for Penn? I'm not going to hold my breath, but IF I get an interview and IF I get accepted I'd like to know IF they might offer me some $$ IF I'm high on their "Hey, We Want You Really Badly" list. I know, that's a lot of if's...🙄

Yeah. I had literally mailed it like 1-2 days before they called me. As for calling them, I think they'll offer it to you via email, letter, or phone if they're going to give you a scholarship. And unless you're planning on making your decision right now, I'd hold off. I'm assuming admissions is swamped with calls from people who haven't even gotten invites yet.

Yes, I am IS for Penn. I don't know how many people they offer that particular scholarship to and if IS/OOS matters. Sadly, in the grand scheme of things $10,000/year is just a drop in the bucket so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Penn is going to be very expensive either way. 😛

For 2016, I think Ohio State will offers $3,000 to every OOS student that attends. If you look at the financial aid powerpoint link that is posted under Incoming Class, it discusses the finanical aid/scholarship process more. They try to help with the large tuition difference between OOS and IS because after the first year, OOS students can apply for residency and hopefully receive in-state tuition. I am IS and received a few small scholarships through OSU also.

That would be amazing and would definitely encourage me to apply to Ohio since their IS after the first year doesn't end up being that great with OOS being so high. I'm surprised if that's the case though. Why wouldn't they just knock down OOS tuition 10k if they're just going to give everyone scholarships anyways? I'm curious to know if that's the case for everyone or not.

Ah, good point. They did reimburse me $500 to fly out for the open house.

I know it's probably too late for the class of 2016, but by re-taking the GRE and scoring 120 points higher the second time, I bumped my score high enough to get a small scholarship from my state for attending my in-state veterinary school.

Did you have to apply specifically for it or did the school offer it to you during the application cycle? Is it a general scholarship for anyone who scores above a certain line? more details 🙂

After I was accepted and confirmed enrollment with a deposit, it was offered; no application necessary. PM'd you 2CatMatt.
