We have a total of six electives at our school. The problem is the rule states you cannot have more than two electives in a sub-specialty.
Here is the issue. If someone is interested in Internal Medicine, then it is perfectly fine to do electives in all of the sub-specialties ( heme/onc, gi, cardio, etc.) with no limit. However, if one is interested in peds, he can only do two total peds focused rotations.
This should not differ, Heme, etc should be able to have a peds vs. adult focus.
(Cannot do peds heme, peds ID, peds cardio etc.)
Many students have said when they interviewed for Peds residencies, they were asked why they did not do more peds electives.
Is this a problem for anyone else and how did you work it out?
It seems like an unfair bias towards adult medicine (IM).
Thanks for your input.
