Currently, I am conflicted about choosing the pharmacy school I will attend. UMICH or UMKC. There's a bit of a price difference as I am a Missouri resident. Right now, a lot of the pros and cons of the schools could go either way depending on how I look at it. U

MICH is a good distance away and expensive (housing is not cheap in Ann Arbor), but UMKC is not as prestigious and is one year longer. The extra year however may allow me to work in more electives and possibly a MPA or MBA... I feel like there is slightly more freedom in classwork at UMKC, but it also appears that UMICH is more hands on with the coursework through labs, etc.

I just need help figuring this out... its a bit of a tough decision.

😕

It's all about priorities = the priorities that are the most important to your are the driving force for making the decision.

Is it a priority to have smaller debt after school?
Is it a priority to be in the most prestigious and reputable school?
Is it important to stay in a familiar place?
Which type of learning is a priority to you?

You have to answer to questions yourself and realize that no school is a perfect fit. I had a similar decision when I had to decide between three schools that all had their pros and cons. It wasn't easy but I centered my expectations of having an adequate education, being able to assist my older parents in an emergency by living nearby (I live in a conservative Asian family), being comfortable in a bigger city, being able to access multiple academic medical centers (Omaha, Nebraska has two), and feeling happy about being on campus.

Those sound like good reasons to me =D

I am currently a student at UMKCSOP. I really don’t think the prestige should be a factor when deciding on a school. Some people seem to believe that it matters a bunch when you are looking to do post-grad work(residency, etc.). I believe everyone who wanted a residency, after graduating from UMKC, has got one thus far. The extra year thing does suck, but like you said, you can work on your MBA/MPH. Many people in my class are doing just that. For in state tuition this “extra” year will amount to about 16K. I have not really looked at other schools curriculums, but I can tell you there are a lot of “hands-on” components of UMKC curriculum. IF you have any other ?’s I will try to answer them.

I am currently #1 on the waitlist for UMKCSOP... Do you think I'm likely to get in? I think just to be safe, I'm going to say yes to UMICH... just so I go somewhere next year.

I would say yes to UMICH. I would say it is very likely that you will get into UMKC. I know they have told people that they are in up to 3 days before orientation in August! But, I would go with the sure thing any day!!!
