I'm having a hard time narrowing down my school list. I was never really integrated into the undergrad pre-med circles, so I'm not sure if this list is realistic or not (I have consulted the MSAR though!).

I have average scores, but am a California resident. Went to a well-respected university, graduated 06 with a degree in Bio.
Overall GPA: 3.7+, BCPM: 3.59
MCAT: 30Q
ECs: undergrad research, some clubs/orgs, stayed in Africa for 2 mo with a public health org, now heavily involved in this org (volunteer), working in a hospital now doing clinical research (employment)

CA schools (because I have to!):
UCSF
UCSD
UCLA
UCI
UCD
USC

Others:
Albany
Albert Einstein
Boston U
Brown
Case Western
Dartmouth
Drexel
Georgetown
Loyola
Mayo
Medical College of Wisc
Mt. Sinai
NYMC
NYU
Oregon Health Sci
Penn State
Roaslind Frank
Rush
Temple
Tufts
U. Maryland
U. Michigan
U. Rochester
U. Wisconson
Wake Forest

I hope to pursue an MD/MPH so I made sure that these all either had MD/MPH programs or would allow students to take time off for their MPH. This is a total of 31 schools - too many? If so, which ones should I strike out and why? Thanks in advance! 🙂

It will be very difficult to get into the Oregon school if you are OOS. Mayo is a school that takes only 40 students a year. So you would really have to stand out with something on your application to get an interview. Other than that, applying to medical school is really like a crap shoot. You never know why you get an interview and why you didn't. So apply to as many schools as you want, as long as you have the time to complete the secondary applications in a thoughtful way and the money to pay for it!

Actually, Oregon accepts a lot of OOS. Definitely keep Oregon.

SUNY Downstate's got an MD/MPH program. Right around your alley with numbers and takes a good amount of OOS'ers (there just aren't that many there since mostly New Yorkers want to attend for $ reasons).
