Hey all, I made a really similar post to this a few months back and received some great advice (special thanks to mrsmile for some perspective). Since then I’ve decided I’m gonna go ahead and apply this year and I’ve drafted up a school list. I’ve heard that this is the area where a lot of people run into trouble, and I’d like to make sure there aren’t any glaring problems.

1. 4.0sGPA/3.98cGPA
2. 521 (131/130/130/130)
3. PA
4. Not URM
5. “T20” undergrad
6. 135 clinical hours (+60 projected)
7. a) 200 clinical research hours (w/ pub, was in close contact with patients and providers in the hospital so I wonder if this can count as clinical experience as well)
b) upcoming honors thesis (300 hours projected)
8. 35 hours shadowing primary care
9. 110 hours non clinical (+50 projected)
10. ~1200 hours of intercollegiate athletics (2 years of D3, have since quit)

School list:
Jefferson
Penn
Emory
Pitt
Yale
Baylor
UWisco
Vermont
Brown
UMich
UCLA
UVA
WUSTL
USF
UChicago
Northwestern
USC Keck
Iowa
Illinois Chicago
Tufts
Harvard
Miami
GWU
Cincinatti
Duke
Stanford
Quinnipiac
Vanderbilt

I know Penn State and Temple are a couple glaring omissions but I’ve decided not to apply based on location. The list feels top heavy so I’m looking for more suggestions of target schools or if I should sub out some schools for others.

I was not really aware of which schools are service oriented so I’m ready to tweak the list to accommodate the low non-clinical hours. I felt that the clinical hours are supplemented by the research though. I was in an operating room everyday next to patients and providers. Honestly it seems to fit more with clinical experience than research. I do recognize as a whole that the hours are low, which is something I’m fine with. I honestly just want to get into a school that will prepare me well and I don’t mind which one.
Are you sure you want to apply with such low clinical and nonclinical hours? 135 clinical hours is barely above the minimum threshold, and 110 nonclinical hours excludes you from many service-oriented schools like UChicago, which is on your list.

Your low clinical and non clinical exposure hours will limit your chances for interviews. Accumulate another 20 hours of physician shadowing and 50+ hours of clinical volunteering before you submit your application. I suggest these schools from your list:
Jefferson
Penn
Emory
Pitt
Yale
Baylor
UWisco
Brown
UMich
UCLA
UVA
WUSTL
USF
UChicago
Northwestern
USC Keck
Iowa
Illinois Chicago
Tufts
Harvard
Miami
Cincinnati
Duke
Stanford
Vanderbilt
You could add these schools:
Hofstra
Einstein
Mount Sinai
Western Michigan
Case Western
Ohio State

I see, thank you for suggestions! Would you recommend that I classify my clinical research as clinical experience as opposed to research? I detailed what it involved in an above reply. Would that serve me better than classifying it as research? Does it even matter what I classify it as?
