I have a 3.59cGPA and a 3.4sGPA with a 504 MCAT(27-28 on the old scale). I want to go to a school that is in a larger city and that has been around for more than 10-15 years. These are the schools I am applying to but I havent shadowed a DO yet. Do you think I have a shot at these schools? Should I add any others?

You're fine!

You're aware of the OH school's "stay in OH for five years post-graduation" rule, righ?

Yes I am. I am just worried that I dont have a DO letter or that I havent shadowed a DO, it will be difficult for me to gain acceptance. I will try my hardest to shadow a DO in the next couple of months but I'm not 100% sure on that.

There are plenty of schools that will take the MD LOR. I hear that LECOM dropped the DO LOR requirement this year.

My school is fine with an MD LOR too, but having the DO letter always helps.

IF there's a DO school within driving distance, go visit and chat up the DO faculty. My DO colleagues love it when people do that.

What state do you reside in?

Philadelphia COM (Yes, you have the option to apply to both campuses with your stats.)

Ohio University Heritage COM (If you live in Ohio & have strong ties there, then yes.)

New York Institute of Technology COM (If you dont live in NY, then no.)

Des Moines University COM (Youre stats are a bit lower than there incoming class, but it's worth a shot)

Chicago COM of Midwestern University (Risky.....but you may fare.)

Touro Univeristy of COM (Yes, TUNCOM & Touro-NY)

Michigan State University COM (If your OOS, be aware your tuition is 90k.)

Im not sure if the schools requires a DO letter. I know OU-HCOM (Ohio) doesnt the last time I checked. To be honest, if you have the money, you can apply pretty much anywhere. If you do your research, you will find out some schools have regional preference....like MSUCOM & OU-HCOM.

I wouldn't bother with msucom or oucom.

I would add in Nova / western instead.

NYIT is private and the is/oos is more to do with the amount of pre meds on NY.

Also ops stats are fine to apply to DMU/ccom

You're closing a lot of doors if you don't get a DO letter. Call every single DO in the area and find one to shadow!

I don't think this is really true. A DO letter is nice, but there are other ways to learn about and meaningfully discuss why you want to go osteopathic. Very few schools actually require the DO letter - nearly all say "letter from a physician" sometimes with the caveat (MD or DO) or (DO preferred).

I realize you don't need to shadow a DO specifically to learn about this profession. That said, if a school says they prefer a DO letter, you're in a hole if you don't have one. Maybe closing doors was too strong....giving yourself an uphill battle, would have been better

I know that this doesn't fit your 10-15 year old rule, but RVUCOM is 20 minutes from downtown Denver and I got in with no DO letter. Just FYI.
