I could use some help with brainstorming schools to apply to this year. I am willing to reach a little but am trying to stay realistic. I'm especially looking for any leads on schools with good connections in infectious disease training.

  • State/Country of Residence: Virginia, ORM, from a rural medically underserved area
  • Ties to other States/Regions: Currently in graduate school in Tennessee
  • Year in School: Graduated 2018, currently pursuing an M.S. in Microbiology
  • Undergraduate Major(s)/Minor(s): B.S. Biology, B.S. Geography
  • Cumulative GPA: 3.98
  • Science GPA: 3.98
  • MCAT Score(s): 515 ( 127 / 127 / 131 / 130 )... 2017 score was 512 ( 126 / 131 / 127 / 128 )
  • Research Experience: 4,000+. 3.5 years in various undergrad labs and an REU, won a Fulbright research award and worked for a year in a lab, now in graduate school full-time with a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship award.
  • Publications/Abstracts/Posters (include how you were credited e.g. First author, second author, etc.): 7 posters as first author, 5 talks as first author (2 at international conferences). 1+ first author papers to come (eventually), and a second author paper in the pipeline but might not happen in time for the cycle.
  • Clinical Experience (paid or volunteer): 500 paid hours as a scribe at a local hospital
  • Physician Shadowing: 40 hours in a NICU
  • Non-Clinical Volunteering: 280 hours as a community tutor, a few dozen hours working with Open Street Map on mapmaking opensource projects for various NGOs, pro bono scholarship advising with anyone looking to apply to Fulbright or the NSF GRFP!
  • Other Extracurricular Activities: teaching assistant for GIS and microbiology lab
