Hello! Texas orm (south asian) applicant with a 3.5 (strong upwards trend; last 154 credit hours are a 3.88 and have a 3.97 masters in sciences in a different field from a t10) and 515 mcat (128/126/131/130). app has been verified and I applied to TCU and Tulane as throwaways while I waited for my mcat.

well rounded but research heavy; research mostly in community engagement and antiracism/underserved communities work; heavy quant and qual experience in clinical/public health/social welfare research. very passionate about disproportionality in child health and child welfare systems.

3500 hours research
1650 hours paid clinical experience
100 hours shadowing (no primary care but I work in primary care research now)
1500 hours TA then Head TA for a program
975 hours volunteering across 3 orgs
7700 hours cultural arts (since I was little)
70 hours leadership as service chair of my spirit organization
others:
a few poster presentations, one oral presentation, submitted a few papers but none accepted yet, couple of scholarships, accelerated research program in undergrad, student government in grad school

i know amcas schools dont love texas applicants but im hoping that getting my masters in a different state will show that im willing to move! this is the oos school list i made based on my stats + schools that have accepted texas residents. need advice cutting it down to around 25 or 30?? for reference ive completed all my tmdsas apps and secondaries.

would also appreciate any advice on DO schools! was planning on applying to KCUCOM, PCOM, UIWSOM, OSUCOM for sure but need reccs on other schools.

I don't think you're going to have much luck outside of texas. Out of state MD schools know from historic Norms that most Texans want to stay in the Lone Star State for that nice Texas low tuition.

You're fine for all of the Texas schools. And I don't think you need any do schools, unless you are itching to get out of texas.

Can you explain why you don't want to do social work or public health, which seems to be where you specialized in your masters??? Exactly what did you research for 3K hours, presumably In your graduate program? How much TA'ing did you do?

What is your BCPM GPA?

I studied policy rather than social work/public health because my long term interest is medical care for pts in welfare systems. I also felt that in this day and age the reality is that vulnerable pt populations need advocates so understanding policy systems/programming development is useful + i got a good scholarship!

My first interest in medicine came from learning about ACE's so I'm very interested in chronic disease management/prevention. I considered public health/clinical research for a while bc I could contribute to efforts in chronic disease there but I enjoy patient engagement in the context of healthcare and felt clinical research didn't teach me enough of the "treatment" aspect or give a deep understanding of disease mechanisms which I'm interested in learning about/working in.

research - i did work in pediatric tbi, prolonged grief disorder, algorithmic equity in healthcare, and sdoh screening mandates at safety net clinics.

bcpm for tmdsas is 3.35 (rip B+'s) and for amcas is 3.4
similar to my cgpa it has a really big upwards trend and i did much better in upper division courses

What did you do in cultural arts for 7700 hours?

Can't blame you for taking a scholarship, but...

Aren't social workers and public health officials, by their actual job descriptions, responsible to understand policy systems and programming development to effectively advocate for vulnerable patients? Yes, some schools start by training their M1 students to be patient navigators, but that's not what doctors do... sorry, that's not what insurance companies pay doctors to do.

Moved to WAMC.

Agreed that you should not spend money applying to AMCAS schools. Getting a masters elsewhere is irrelevant outside of the fact that it may help for that specific state's schools (and this is dependent on the specifics). You have a host of schools that wouldn't accept even most OOS students from other states than Texas (LSU, ETSU, Missouri etc). You could try TCU and Tulane.

You seem like you have a good shot at MD schools based on what you described, so make sure to put together a compelling app. I'll play devil's advocate and say if you choose to apply to OOS schools, make sure to write strong Why Our School Essays and pick schools where you have strong connections or family.
