Can USNWR be used to approximate school selectivity? For the purpose of determining chances, reach schools, etc.

I’m mainly wondering about this because there are many schools for which my stats are median or higher, but some of these schools are much higher rank and others are lower/unranked. Despite median GPA/MCAT being the same, I know some schools are more selective about ECs and such. Also some of the schools I’m wondering about aren’t really “big name” schools so I’m having trouble finding info on SDN.

Can the rankings be useful for this or are they pretty much arbitrary?

From our perspective, USNWR rankings are more or less arbitrary.

A much better resource is MSAR: https://apps.aamc.org/msar-ui/#/landing
You can view the amount of applications received, interviews extended and matriculated students for each school. I highly recommend it if you don't have it yet, it costs about $20 per year, so less than the cost of one application on AMCAS.

There's a reason why we in medical education refer to USNWR as "US Snooze and Worst Report".

The only people who take it seriously are pre-meds and med school deans.

As Griffin above points out, use MSAR.
