Hi,
If a student has already accepted a dental school's offer of acceptance by paying the deposit, what reasons can a school give to rescind an offer of acceptance ?
For ex., can a school make up the excuse (any excuse they want) that an offer was incorrectly made & rescind the acceptance even if the student has already paid the deposit ?

If a student has already paid the deposit, and the dental school rescinds the offer of acceptance, what can that student do then ? Appeal to the AADSAS, hire a lawyer.. ?

One excuse would be that the school mailed the letter to the wrong person (which has been done in the past). Another reason would be they found out that you submitted false information in your application. Hiring a lawyer for either reason wouldn't pan out (at least it didn't for the last poor guy who had that happen to him).

What if someone were only accepted to dental school A, but really wants to go to dental school B (except that they're waitlisted at B). Can dental school A make up a reason (any reason) to rescind an offer of acceptance just because it found out the student had been contacting school B to try to get off the waitlist there ?

No, that wouldn't happen... schools know that their classes aren't final until the 1st day of classes because people sometimes get off wait lists at the last minute which changes their plans.

How can the student avoid ruffling school A's feathers & avoid school A's finding out that s/he had been contacting school B to try to get off the waitlist there ?

So, if u've been accepted to a school & u've accepted their offer by paying the deposit, there's nothing they can do to withdraw that offer, even if they don't like that u are contacting school B to get off the waitlist there ? So a dental school can't withdraw an offer by making up any excuse, just because now it found out the student prefers another school to it ?

No. Dental schools have offered you a position in their class, so unless you have a conditional offer and don't meet those conditions they will not rescind their offer. This is assuming your application is truthful and they don't find any lies.

They understand that they are not the dream school of every accepted applicant and will not be "offended" if they find out you are talking to another dental school. Remember, this is a business you are talking about, not a jealous boyfriend!

Is there a binding contract document somewhere that states a school can't withdraw an offer of acceptance, unless the applicant lied on their application ? cuz I've heard of cases where a school withdrew an offer because they "accidentally" mailed the acceptance letter with your name on it instead of someone else's. A lawyer wouldn't have proof that the school really made that "mistake," instead of just being offended. I just want a binding contract that I can take to a lawyer if I suspect the school withdrew the offer because it was offended (u never know about people's personalities). As it's the only school I've been accepted to, I don't wanna take any chances that the 1 offer I have gets withdrawn, so I want a binding contract document. Is that available ?

What are the ways school A can find out that u've been contacting school B ?

I doubt such a contract exists. However unless you have something to hide I really wouldn't worry about a school rescinding a conditional acceptance. The school will let you know what your conditions are for acceptance, if any... if you're in doubt call the school. In general you need to finish all pre-requisites with at least a C and have earned your degree before dental school starts. Also some schools do a background check on you. If they find something you didn't disclose, that could be trouble.

Also, I don't think school A cares about whether or not you call school B and try to get in off the wait list. Schools only know if you are holding multiple deposits through AADSAS; in this case they will call and ask you to pick your top school. Schools aren't out to get you. If they didn't want you in the class they would have just rejected you.

They may have wanted u in the class when they were under the impression that they were ur #1 school choice, but now they find out they're not...So would u have a case that can be won in a court if a dental school does rescind their offer for no apparent reason ? You have proof of deposit payment, their acceptance letters & other documents/emails of acceptance. Can u use these in a court to prove u were clearly given the acceptance & fulfilled requirements, so that their reason of "accidentally" writing ur name on the acceptance email/letters doesn't hold water in a court of law ?

This thread is kind of ridiculous, I smell a guilty conscience....

I have a story from the international dental programs in CA this year:

So basically, all CA schools were in touch with each other.
someone accepted at UOP, waitlisted at UCSF, took the UOP offer and was waiting for UCSF...
However, UCSF was in touch with UOP. Found out that the person had taken UOP and AUTOMATICALLY deleted their name from the UCSF waitlist.

this happened for all the CA schools.
In a way, it was meant to avoid people paying deposits at multiple schools and backing out at the last minute.

So, yes, your scenario can play out. and mostly, you won't get a contract.

I believe that AADSAS changed their policy just a couple years ago so that schools now know which schools you've been accepted to. I'm not sure of the exact details on this one.

sounds like collusion, in a way.
seems like a bit of a stretch.

A friend of mine was subject to this.
UCLA had been fair enough to inform waitlisted applicants that their names will be dropped if they accept any other CA school.

She lost out on UCSF becuse of this.

I'm curious, what would you guys have done if it happened in a 4 yr program?

can school policy be challenged?

I have heard that the California schools do talk. But, I got into UCLA and UofP on December 1st and put a deposit down at UCLA. Then got into UCSF in January, so who knows.

So are people holding out for UCSF these days over UoP? What's the current thinking re: UoP because it was always my understanding that it was the premier clinical school of CA but I know things change as the years go on.

Or is it related to cost? Isn't UoP is something like 80k a year these days?

criminal records, failure to complete prerequisites, lying on applications, or sudden poor performance in the last semester of school could be reasons for your acceptance to be taken away. a month before school started, i was required to submit background checks and my latest school transcripts.
