Does anyone know where I might find a compilation of all medical schools' statistics from the match? For instance, I'd like to know what percentage get their top choice from each school, what residencies students are matching into, etc. Thanks!

(ps, this is a duplicate post from the premed forum... I decided to copy it here because I thought you all might be a bit more knowledgable about the topic)

You can try searching around on some schools' websites -- occasionally they will post their most recent match information.

Probably your best bet is to contact the office of student affairs for each school you are interested in -- if they aren't too busy, they might be willing to email you the information.

Be wary of the statistics like "95% of our grads matched in one of their top three choices (or top choice" -- those statistics are sort of micro-managed -- I believe for most schools that the Deans "pre-approve" the field that a student is hoping to match into, and what programs he/she is applying for. Ideally, this tempers unrealistic expectations and keeps the student from wasting unnecessary time and money, but it also serves to keep the schools' match rate statistics favorable as well.

Good to know, thanks.

Realize that although the school you go to matters somewhat in match success, where you are placed depends most on your qualifications.

Dont ask what the percentage of students getting their first choice is. Instead ask how many students went unmatched last year. Ask how many people got their top choices for Radiology, Dermatology, Ent, Urology etc. I think these questions may be better for guaging what you are after.

Also as far as I know schools never prohibit you from applying to any specialty. You may be told that you have a minimal chance of matching and told to apply to a backup. 😀

I think you're shooting yourself in the head asking in advance about residency match rates before you start med school. It's much more important to have a good education and experience in medical school then worry about matching in residency.

Of course, I did the same thing as a premed, looking for residency match rates, but I realize now it was a waste of time.

Bottom line, most U.S. residency applicants will get one of their top three choices for residency. And no matter what school you go to, Harvard, Yale or whatever, it will be easy to match in Medicine or Peds but hard to get ENT, Derm or whatever the 'in vogue' competative residency is the year you graduate.

If you enjoy medical school, you will probably do well. If you do well, you will be able to get whatever residency you want. If you don't do well, being at Harvard won't save you.

Good luck,
ERIC

I agree that selecting schools by match lists is not very helpful.Once you get past the top 20 schools or so they start to look very similar in quality. However it is interesting to get an idea of what sorts of places people end up going to from different med schools. There are differences.
For a partial listng try mcwmd.com.
