Let's just say hypothetically that an individual attends a medical school without a home radiation oncology program. What are some things you can do to bolster your application? Perusing this forums seems to indicate that having significant research in med school is important, so where should you focus your research interests if you don't have a home program? Diagnostic radiology? Heme/onc?

Research will be important, and it should be oncology-based. Doesn't have to be radonc, but at least cancer-related.

Away rotations will be critical, and you should do at least three or so: One at a "dream" institution for you and then at least two at programs in which you'll have a shot at matching.

Other than that, you'll have to make sure the obvious stuff such as grades, step I scores are very much taken care of, as you're already at a (slight) disadvantage. Not a great disadvantage, and it won't be impossible to match, but you'll need to make sure everything's locked up nice and tight.
