I just got an email from UMich detailing the averages for their Step I and Step II scores, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has this info for other med schools so that I can make a comparison...

Anyone got the info?

I'm pretty sure that most schools don't release that sort of information, besides the few that brag about their averages being in the high 220's (UPenn).

I see...UMich must be breaking the mold here...

Out of curiosity, what was Michigan's average?

Also, what is considered a good score? I have heard 230+ is good, but if a school like Penn (presumably wiith some of the best and the brightest) is only at 220s, that can't be right. It doesn't seem likely they would have an average board score below what's considered to be a good score.

I think high 220's is good. every school I interviewed at told as at the interview what their average scores were, but the info was hard to come by before hand. UTSW avergaes between 226-228 for data they gave us (last few years) if that helps. National average is 216, I don't know what standard deviation is. I am sure UPenn's upper 220 is on the good side.
Keep in mind that above 230 is good for the individual student, but the average is obviously going to be lower than an ideal score for you.

UMich's Step I avg. was 230, while Step II was 234. Pretty impressive, eh?

what does 220 and 230 translate into in terms of percentiles. I am a second year student and I still don't know

It seems like lots of schools have the 220 average....or at least the ones i interviewed at. UTMB-Galveston's average for this past year was 225-230.

The SD is supposed to be 20 pts, making 1 SD above avr (215+20=235) the 84th%, 1.5 dev=245, 93rd%; 2 sd's=255 = 98th%.

in terms of MCAT, since we all know that, they relate to a 32 (235), 34(245), & 36(255) respectfully.

(Im just trying to show the relative rarity of the upper end scores from an exam we all know. NO correlation is implied, especially since only those w/ a 30 MCAT (on average) get in and take the USMLE, any comparison is likely very skewed. Everything ive seen shows little correlation b/w mcat & usmle; effort seems to = usmle.....)
