Schools by tuition

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's hard to make a list like this because it will change by state of residency for many schools. Just know that your state medical school is the cheapest one.

1. COA is more important than tuition
2. Other than state schools, COA doesn't vary much in between schools except for a few schools.
3. The variability in financial aid is greater than the variability in COA, meaning this information is of little use other than those schools at either extreme.

I know that they plan on raising the tuition for the UC schools, but does anyone know by how much? Also, are they planning on shutting down any programs or anything like that?

I've only heard of them raising tuition at the UG level. Also they are opening up I think 2 more Medical schools in Cali.

I would actually think average student indebtedness would be even more important than CoA. Of course... it doesn't factor in the students with Richie McRich parents that foot the bill and all, does it?

it also includes hpsp and mstp in the figures, so it's somewhat obfuscated. still a decent resource, the best really out of everything that's out there imo

Agreed. It would be much improved with distribution info or at least something like standard deviation. Also doesn't make any mention of whether the aid is strictly need or merit as well.
My point was that applying to schools based on any of these metrics is silly (other than state schools, which you know will be pretty cheap, unless you live in Pennsylvania), unless you really can't think of other ways to eliminate schools.

It also depends on whether the school fixes tuition/has a cost-of-degree program. If you're comparing a $35,000/year school to a $45,000/year school, the difference isn't quite so extreme if the cheaper school increases its tuition by 5% yearly and the more expensive school fixes their tuition for all four years.

And like others said, cost of attendance matters. If you go to school in, say, St. Louis, you'll probably be paying $400/month rent, whereas in NYC it's gonna be more like $1200/month at the cheapest.

Even further, some schools give merit scholarships, others don't. Some schools give significant grants, others don't.

tl;dr: The tuition listed in the MSAR is very deceiving.

I disagree. If you know your situation, it is easier to calculate your total based on tuition and cost of living. The COA award is also biased, because it is usually higher than it needs to be in order to allow the student more wiggle room.

Unless you are a rockstar or a URM you can cross scholarships off the list, but if you do get them, then you can adjust your numbers accordingly. Either way, the average indebtedness figures are way off. I would be more inclined to think they are better figures if they utilize median data rather than average data.

Just my take though, because I know I'm funding my entire ride. No scholarships (yet at least), no parental support, no spousal support, and no other random support that would reduce my tuition, cost of living, and interest.

this is a major SDN canard that I feel the need to refute here. I am most assuredly neither a rockstar, nor a URM - and I got scholarship aid, at my state school no less. It might take being a po' boy like me though to get it. Anyway, I totally believed this during my app year and was then stunned to get some pretty major support come April.

I agree that the numbers would be more useful if they were medians, not means.

Question: does anyone know if the USN figures include undergrad debt? always curious, but never ran down the answer.
