Schools that favor untraditional students

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone know of any medical schools that favor untraditional students?

I am not sure if anyone favors, but Osteopathic Medical schools do tend to have more non-trad students.

If there were schools that put nontrads a step ahead of the green, fresh out of schoolers then we'd all know and be applying to it right now. 😉

I don't know any off the top of my head, but I remember reading through the US News and World Report book on US Medical Schools and under each med school profile they typically include the percentage of students per class that have taken time off before matriculating...this can give you some idea of the school's relationship with and attitude towards nontraditional students.

I went to med school at 39 yo. (downstate). There were at least 15 people in my class older than 30. I had a 61 on the old mcat. Good luck I'm out of med school 13 years and work as an internist.

Part of whether a school favors you has to do w/ why you want the MD.

My school favored me because I fit their (fading) goal of creating more primary care MDs who will practice in their state, with all the touchy feely help the poor and downtrodden bunk that goes with that. Other schools have different niches, I would not have been special for them. It is also the case that there are a pile of us who are 30+, but we're all quite different from each other.

But I was totally unaware of this when I was applying, and until my interview day had no idea the school would be a good fit for me.

If you can get a 40 on the MCAT and have a 4.0 GPA and you're a non-trad, I can guarantee you that all the medical schools in the country will become "non-trad" friendly to you.

Well, I want to stay right here in the natural state and function in primary care or at least train in it since I want to be a generalist, but I'm about the most non-touchy feely, nurturing you'll find.

My school (OHSU) has a notoriously high percentage of nontraditional students. Personally, I think it's because OHSU places so much emphasis on interviews, essays, and "non-tangibles", and nontrads typically have more interesting stories to tell (not to mention that many have more experience with interviews, presentations, and public speaking).
