Ok so I don't know if there is such things in US, but here in Canada we have schools that forgive some courses and do not include them in your GPA calculation.

So if there are such things, can you please create a comprehensive list of US medical schools that:

1) Do not count courses taken during the summer in your GPA

2) Drop your lowest course from your GPA

3) Consider the highest one/two/three undergrad years

4) Any other school that gives some type of "forgiving"?

Thanks.

DO schools forgive your old grades if you retake the classes and get higher grades. Sorry but MD schools don't do the same thing or things like that.

Search DO Medical School grade retakes. I doubt there is anything like the questions you have came up with at any MD medical school. I hope I get proven wrong though.

Good luck.

Every grade you obtain in undergrad is used in calculating your GPA in the US. Also, your GPA is calculated by your undergraduate university, not by the medical school you're applying to. I know for Ontario, each med school calculates applicants' GPAs differently. I think that is part of the reason why Canadian matriculants' averages appear so obscenely high - due to the various forms of forgiveness. I think Queen's calculates your GPA based on your two best full years, which in my opinion is awesome of them.

I had a question for anyone that can please help as well! I am about to be a senior in undergrad and was thinking about retaking some of the core sciences that I did not do well in after I graduate at my local state school. More specifically, didn't do so well in chem so I would retake it my last year and then take orgo at my state school during the summer. My question is do med schools look down on students who have to retake sciences and if I do well in the retaken sciences at the state school and my original school is private or a "name brand" school would they weigh the two classes differently because they are from two different schools?

Thank you and sorry for it being so long!

Orgo was a long class(multiple classes where I was actually) but if you're in the Cish range I think you have a decent idea. It will demonstrate that you are conscious of and care enough about the quality of your work that you are willing to reinvest your time and money in order to improve it. My friend was bummed about a B- he got in advanced bio, so he retook it and got an A+.... I can't think of a better way to make a B- look nicer without erasing it altogether. I did something similar as well, and feeling better about the course later was just a rewarding as how it looked to 3rd parties.

thank you for replying. So the fact that the better grades would come from a state school opposed to my original home school (private and name brand) would not let them view those retaken courses as easier because of the school I took them at?

thanks

For many students that want to take courses over the summer (for whatever reason) their only option is to do them close to home. There is no way they would LOOK DOWN on you for retaking a course anywhere (unless the grade somehow didn't improve). Is it possible that they will recognize that the course you retake is at a less reputable school and assume it was easier? Possibly. My main point is that improvement looks good, and can be used to send a favorable message about your personality. IMO, this gesture far outweighs any (unlikely) concern over a discrepency between the difficulty of the schools.

thanks for advice! I have another question if thats okay. I was wondering what if my sgpa after retaking those courses improve to about a 3.2 or 3.3 could i still apply to med school right after or do i have to try a smp or something? or does it depend on my mcat score? (which i have not taken it yet). i really wanted to avoid having to find more money for the smp if i had to do that but i also wanted to give getting into med school my best shot! what do you think?

thanks again!
