I searched and I can't find anything here. Does anyone have a list of schools that only accept in-state applicants? I think I heard UMass is one of them. I am trying to cut my application list down. Danke!

It would probably be easier if you posted your list. There are quite a few that don't take anybody from OOS.

here's what university of washington sent me a while back:

Dear XXXXXXXXXX:

The Admissions Committee for the University of Washington School of Medicine has completed its preliminary review of your application. As an out-of-region candidate, you did not meet the criteria for further consideration to the regular medical school program. We thank you for your interest in our School of Medicine.

heh. fools.

Heh... well, the "long" list is just about every school from DC to Massachusetts (we really don't want to move too far from family), and I'm a PA resident.

UMass only accepts in-state for their MD program, they do accept OOS for their MD/PhD program.

this is a great example of a situation where it'd be totally worth it for you to buy the MSAR, or at least go to your local library and look at it.

U Mass will only accept 2 or 3 MD/Phd students from out of state. All regular MS1's at U Mass are in state.

The University of Minnesota Duluth will accept native Americans from out of state but the rest of the class is pure Gopher.

Southern Illinois, Mercer, Arizona and Mississippi are all 100% in state.

For a comprehensive look at the situation see this table:

http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/table1-facts2009school-web.pdf

Good luck!

I have it, the 2008-2009 copy. I don't believe UMass actually specifies they only accept in-state, or I just didn't read it carefully enough.

bingo... if you look at the listings of how many IS/OOS applied, interviewed, matriculated you will see that there are like 3 OOS matriculants. to me, that seems like a pretty clear sign that it's not worth your time to apply there if you're OOS. i think in the 2009-2010 copy (which is the one that i borrowed from the library) it also says this explicitly in the written portion.

i wasn't trying to be obnoxious by suggesting the MSAR. it has the official info. people on SDN are knowledgeable, but sometimes it's good to see the original source of info.

Well look at that, you are absolutely right! I didn't even think to look at those numbers. I was looking at the "Selection Factors" on the opposite side, where it says both IS and OOS are elgible for admission. Drrr on me. Thanks!

i know that LSU med school only accepts IS applicants..

Most of the southern and western state schools accept very few (if any) OOS applicants. The states with several schools (VA, NY, etc) tend to accept more OOS students at their state schools.

LSU-NO
LSU-Shreveport
Medical College of Georgia
Mississippi
Tennessee
South Carolina
MUSC
Arkansas
North Dakota
South Dakota
Nebraska
Kansas
Oklahoma
New Mexico
Nevada
Hawaii
UMass
Northeastern Ohio
Southern Illinois
UMDNJ - both

Any more? This was off the top of my head.

See this data sheet: AAMC

Any med school that has "100%" under the in-state matriculants column means...they only accept instate.

This list is erroneous. Many of the above schools are highly biased against out of state applicants but some, such as North Dakota, will accept some out of state students. The best thing to check is this table!:prof:

i disagree-- that table has really helpful info, but it's better to look in the MSAR where the info is more fleshed out. according to that table, UMass takes "some out of state students." but if you read the MSAR, you'll learn that those 3% of students are MD/PhD applicants, and that *all* MD matriculants at UMass are in-state.

i only know about UMass, but i assume this is true for some other schools as well.

OP, too bad that you do not want to consider the West Coast. Oregon (OHSU) loves out of state students, which is especially irritating to the numerous qualified Oregon residents who are rejected every year so that OOS students can attend OHSU. One of my buddies was rejected recently, so he had to attend Duke instead but he is doing ok.

So if you are looking for a school that is OOS friendly, OHSU is waiting with open arms. Come, study, and then return to your family on the East Coast while Oregon residents suffer from a physician shortage. Sounds like good public policy to me.
