Any of you here have an idea of which schools seriously take the whole application into consideration and not just reject you if you are lacking in one area. Ive read schools like loyola look hard beyond the numbers of the application and look for people they think will "fit" and have qualities needed to be a good doctor.

Albert Einstein--my interviewer knew my application extrememly well and was much more interested in talking to me about why I felt I would make a compassionate doctor than why I got a C in second semester physics.

I thought the UCSD application itself lent itself to my presenting myself as a whole person, and then my interviewers were very interested in me as a total package and had really paid attention to my application.

OHSU

Harvard (or they NEVER would have interviewed someone like me)

UCSD

UCI

Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine/Case Western (Their secondary essay is something along the lines of "tell us about something non-medical that is interesting to you." I wrote about growing up on the ocean, playing with octopi in tide pools, the surfing big waves, surfing with whales, and open water swimming with dolphins. They seemed to get a kick out of it.)

Wash U...they read the whole thing between "MCAT _____" and "."

Are you really asking, "What schools will accept me even though my stats suck?" I don't think any of us think we'd make bad doctors. "Why would any school who seeks to admit people with qualities to be a good doctor not admit me?"

Creighton makes the claim that they look for people with "solid" academic credentials and who are good people deep down.

stanford appears to have an incredibly intense screening/reviewing process. during the interview they have clearly looked over each aspect of your file.

What was that little saying we learned in preshool? "If you can't say anything nice..."

jackets5 asked a simple question and you responded with totally uncalled for attack. I don't know who you are or if you are simply having a rough week, but its safe to say that this uncalled for attack does not smack of the personal "qualities to be a good doctor." Why, exactly, are you so bitter that you need to take it out on random posters?

Luck to you jackets5. There ARE schools that care about your extracurriculars and their potentially negative effect on your grades/scores. I know someone at Harvard who didn't get a secondary to his alma mater UC because his verbal was too low. Their loss, he is brilliant, talented, engaging, and will make a fantastic physician.

I don't mean to nitpic, but when you phrase it that way, it sounds like they are not good people if you just look on the surface.

But in all seriousness, while I suspect that most schools have a minumum numerical cutoff standard they won't usually go below, above that minimum they will try and get an interesting mix of numerical superstars and people with interesting backgrounds/experiences. I suspect that most schools read the whole application, but there are probably an awful lot of people that meet both criteria pretty well, all of whom will make good doctors, and so they have to draw the line someplace and let some good ones fall through the cracks.

It wasn't an attack. So many people on here are asking this question, but deep down, the root of the issue is that they don't have great stats and want to know if there are any schools that will accept them, the good person they are, despite this.

Also, really, which of us thinks that we don't have "qualities to be a good doctor"? I think people with low scores assume, as stated earlier, that people with high scores can't possibly be real, caring, talented people with additional ECs.

(and I recently finished a gruelling 4 hour test 😱 ) Maybe that's why I'm a little cynical right now? Really, I'm not a bitter, mean, etc.

Ugh, 4 hour test. I hope you are headed for happy hour or otherwise enjoyable Friday evening. 😀

No harm intended. I just felt the post was a little harsh.

I hope no one thinks that high scores "correlate" (to use a fav sdn word) with poor personality, but I suppose its a method of self validation. "HE/SHE has great grades, but I have a personality because I was out socializing -drinking- instead." Most truely intelligent people don't flaunt it so you might never know what their grades were. Unfortunately life is not fair and the talent genes are not distributed evenly. My best friend in college was the girl everyone wanted to hate. She graduated from our bio program in 3 years with a 3.9, doing 2 NCAA sports, surfing every day, and volunteering. She was tall, blonde, slender, and pretty. She has a heart of gold and would never hurt anyone, but there was a lot of jealosy directed at her.
