do each of you have a waterlase?

i got to play around with one on some previously extracted teeth, and watch it in action (no shot!) ... was excellent on soft tissue as well. what's your opinion of it so far?

NYU (the undergrad clinic)

Baylor's got a new SIM lab (2 years old I believe) and a revamped clinic. It's NICE!

Houston has a new SIM lab this year which will be utilized starting next year from what I was told. Also, the students I spoke with said that from last year they would be getting in new equipment little by little.

YAY for new things at Texas schools! 😍

UCSF is in their third and final year of revamping their sim labs and other areas. I believe they put like 6 million into it. From what I saw at my interview and the publications on the technical advances, I am very pleased with it. It's not brand spanking new like Maryland or AZ but a huge improvement from the last 10 years or so!

I'm stoked!

Marquette U., School of Dentistry --brand new building erected in 2002. 👍 👍

I would not consider Nova's (actually NSU) facilities to be "new" anymore. They are about 7 years old and at "par" with what many schools have now if not outdated in some respects.

As you read above, many schools are spending millions remodeling from top to bottom. I believe NYU is going to spend 100 million in renovations over the next few years making it one of the most gorgeous schools out there.

and strangely enough, incoming NYU students will pay over $320,000 to attend NYU and live in NYC 😱
so yeah, i hope it's gorgeous, because you'll be paying it off for a very long time

obviously newer facilities are better than older ones... but be aware of who foots the bill (i.e., the state or the students?). in the end, a dentist is a dentist is a dentist. personally, when i get out of school, i'd like my paycheck to go into the technology in my own practice... not paying off loans for the technology at my alma mater!

I thought Penn's facilities were pretty impressive.

UDMercy's dental school is only 1-2 yrs old. They moved to a new facility.

Yeah, but the preclinical facilities were pretty stone age...

UNC had extremely impressive facilities, and they're going through even more construction right now...

MUSC is in the process of building a completely new building for the CDM. I've seen the plans. Its tight. It should be functional by summer 09 Brand new SOTA everything. Just in time if I get in. 🙂

UCSF plans to renovate its pre-clinic floor so that it would be ready for the 2009 incoming class.

second Marquette University, not only is the clinical lab new, the entire school is practically new!

Unless Baylor got a new sim lab from the one they had when I interviewed 2 years ago, the sim lab has been there since 2003 or so.

San Antonio has a new sim lab, in it's 2nd year with flat screen monitors, and air, water, and suction at every station.

Houston has a sim lab too, maybe a year or so old. It has around 50 units with simulation units in a full-size dental chair at each station.

USC is in a phase of renovating the clinics. Completion date would be 2011, when we (2009 applicants) start clinic. They have a little test example built by Patterson with 4 chairs...its amazing....prettier than a lot of offices I see.

UDMercy's dental school is only 1-2 yrs old. They moved to a new facility.

actually UDM's facilities are less than a year old...they just moved into the new school in January. they are amazing!

Indiana

Louisville

too!

Actually, some guys told us the facility at Indiana is old.

Nono~ Their small part of dental building just needs re-painting (brush touch)

Inside of the building, they have the great facility.

Louisville has the state of the art facility, and it's one of the strong features of this dental school.

Btw, can anybody send a digital photo shot of thier dental building? (Both admission building and library - Just 3-4shot )

I forgot to bring my memory card of my digital camera then. :bang:

I think facility can't be the one of the primary criteria in selecting a dental school. All were great! 👍

Visbimmer, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Louisville does NOT have "state of the art" facilities. They are planning large-scale renovations, but they aren't anything unique right now. They had a nice looking sim lab and ortho dept, though.

However, I do agree that a fancy clinic shouldn't be a deciding factor. I REALLY liked Louisville, but it was because of the people and the curriculum, not bells and whistles.

And my addition to the post by SomethinPositive: WesternU's digital renderings do indeed look nice. However, the clinic does not yet exist....so while it will be one of the newest facilities, it's niceness can only be based on projections right now.

I am sure that you had been to Louisville interview.

Yes~people there were really really nice and collaborative.

My interviewers were really nice, too!

So, I am sure that this school is student oriented!

I like this school because of that kind of atmosphere as well!!

Yes~ their facility is in the state of the art status.
Their thinking and evidence are stated on their official website.

I like their facility, both the exterior and interior.

A few of many unique things (Actually, UNIQUE=OUTSTANDING)

1) possibly, dental research!

ex) a) Measuring one's health status by one's saliva
b) Correlation between gum disease and heart disease
---> Opportunity to participate in research beginning from the summer break before the matriculation in this school as a dental student
c) Two big research center including oral health and systemic disease group
d) Great amount of national funding

2) A leader in computer assisted education

3) Cubicle system

Minnesota just finished up a $10 million renovation with an awesome sim clinic. If fact, us first years actually get to use it. Basically a gps monitor senses your handpiece as you drill in a plastic tooth within a typodont. It then grades you based on your prep (Wall angles, depth, etc.) which sometimes sucks because its pretty hardcore. Its pretty nice though.

GPS?! what do they need that for. Although my school would love that...treat us like 8 year olds. I'm pretty sure they know if I use the restroom every day or not.

I cant wait to see this implemented though. "o, i'm sorry, your prep reduction was off by .06873mm..." awesome!

Hands down, Western U has the newest facilities

When I interviewed there, they are doing a research programs to see how one's grade correlates with their DAT scores... It's really interesting. The computuer has 90 (or around there) different procedures. I have a lot of work to do...:laugh::laugh:

i'll post up UConn, and UMDNJ were very nice too (well the clinic, the pre-clinic is older)

we should get a huge list going

tufts' $66 million dollar construction will be complete by the end of next year. new sim labs, 25% more chair space, new PG clinics, new classrooms, etc.

VCU has a two year old dentsim lab and mannequin sim lab for the pre-clinic courses. Also, we are getting digital radiographs and patient records with computers at every chair next Spring. They will also complete construction of the new Perkinson Building by April 2009.

Louisville's sim clinics were built 7, 8 years ago, so they are not exactly "state of the art" anymore - although I would still consider that as relatively new.

The people were indeed the deciding factors for me to choose Louisville. Heck, I haven't even spent a penny on textbooks since my big has given me everything I need.

always looks better than all the hotels in NYC.

TOO CLEAN! 🙂

how are people saying Western has the newest facilities when they don't even have facilities? don't get me wrong, I really like Western...I am even going there, But to say they have the newest facilities is just not true.

"how are people saying Western has the newest facilities when they don't even have facilities?"

Or clinical faculty...

they certainly don't have the OLDEST facilities

Well then by that thinking the schools with the newest, newest facilities would be the University of Southern Nevada in Jordan Utah, the University of New England in Maine, Texas Tech Dental School, the University of Arkansas and Midwestern School of Dentistry Illinois campus. They will (if they ever exist) will have newer facilities than either Western or Midwestern. Go Western...Go Western...

Aw just kidding. Gotta laugh with all this seriousness on this forum.

no need to be stubborn there
will u be going to western this year?

Well, at the moment its not really up to me. It would be nice. Relatively close to the house probably door to door be like 30 min.
