Hi guys,

Does anyone know which schools don't require (or least don't really enforce) class attendance? I find that I generally teach myself at home much faster and better than if I have go to class; it takes me less than half to time to learn something by myself than having to listen to somebody else. I understand that in some cases they even record the lectures for downloading so you can watch at home? (I'm talking about class only, obviously you have to attend labs and such).

Can we make a list of such schools? Thanks!!

Sounds like a PBL based curriculum is for you: LECOM + USC

but don't you have to be there for the PBL? Wouldn't that be even more inefficient, because you are learning from non-experts (classmates)? I would think that self learning > learning from professor > learning from peers ??

Why don't you just get into school first, then decide if you want to skip class.

Oh sorry this is true...well I know NYU and Maryland have relatively large class sizes and great pod cast systems for lecture.

Case is also partially PBL so you will be in school 8-12 or 10-2 a lot of the time.

Please keep em coming guys! I'm looking to apply to 12 places total. So far I have:

USC
LECOM
NYU
Maryland
Case

Any more? Thanks!

From what I remember, Tufts also has a pretty large class size and a lot of people can do away with podcasts and recordings uploaded from lectures. I don't know about Boston.

Can't comment on the other schools. But that list you have up there is about as PBL/self study as it gets. You should take a look at your GPA and DAT and add some other ones that your stats fit. You can't always count on getting into a PBL school, which is actually just USC and LECOM, which are essence, the purists in PBL learning for dentistry.

So PBL basically usually means more time off right? What are the best PBL schools? My DAT and GPA are very competitive at all schools so I am excluded only by state of residence.

I think USC and LECOM are the only purely PBL schools. Apparently Case is also partially PBL. Harvard also has some PBL but I don't know how much.

That's all I know.

I suppose you could try University of Phoenix, DeVry, or ITT tech. I don't think there is much "class" time there.

Is this really your sole criterion for choosing a dental school?

This is crazy. Or maybe I'm just an idealist.

Le Sigh.

Solid suggestions. What's better than getting your degree on your couch? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

You could skip a ton of class at Columbia. All the big science classes are recorded, no attendance. There are few classes second semester you have to attend, but people still end up leaving early. I know a few people who show up to almost nothing and are doing fine.

At Harvard many of the lectures are optional but they have required tutorials.

Add it to the list! Equal opportunity at all of them.
