I remember something vaguely from class notes about schwannomas presenting with CN V symptoms before CN VII symptoms despite CN VII being closer. Can anyone confirm this? I was thinking it was the CN V symptoms that typically brings a patient into the clinic.

This is incorrect. CN V can be involved and often results in trigeminal neuralgia, but this is not nearly as common as it affects cochlear nerves causing hearing loss and/or tinnitus.
In order of frequency: Cochlear (95%), vestibular nerve (61%), trigeminal nerve (17%), and facial nerve (6%), per Uptodate.
