Science LOR Requirement- Can I use research professor whose class I took for credit?

So it was a research class that I took 2 semester of. Can I use him for science requirement for letters?

Would this not depend on the school? I heard that some schools that require science letters from a "professor that has instructed you in a class" do not count research for credit as a "class".
