I have searched about this in the forum, but I didn't find what I needed. I feel like I've posted this, but I can't seem to find the thread!

I've got about 3-4 schools in mind, but I have a particular interest in SCO.

To SCO students:
where are the better neighborhoods around SCO?
How much would rent be?
How is living in Memphis?
Do the positives outweigh the negatives? (This means costs/debt, living, etc)

The better neighborhoods are Mud Island, certain parts of downtown, Germantown, Cordova, Collierville. I found out the hard way when I lived out in East Memphis/Bartlett. The crime can get pretty bad- you get what you pay for sometimes. I am now living on Mud Island.

My observations:
Married people tend to live out in Cordova/Germantown (30min away from school)
-you're looking at $700-900 for a 1-2bedroom apartment
Singles - Mud Island, right on the Mississippi River. (10min from SCO)
-$700-900 for 1-2bedrooms
Some random people live out in West Memphis/Marion, Arkansas and Southaven, MS (15-20 min from SCO).
If you're on a budget, you can consider Bartlett/East Memphis:
rent can be cheap as $200-600.

Look at www.apartmentratings.com for reviews of the apartments you're interested in.

Living in Memphis is interesting, but I am getting used to it. Rent is pretty cheap in Memphis. I could not afford the apartment I am in if I was back in VA. Also it was cheaper to live in Memphis than Chicago and Philly when I applied a few years ago.

$200 sounds like a scary place to live :scared:

I heard a year or two ago that Memphis has the lowest cost of living of all cities with over 500,000 residents. I think it was on SCO's website, it might still be.

$200 is a scary place to live.
DON'T LIVE THERE!

🙂

But the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.

You can PM me if you want more info about living in Memphis.

does anyone know anything about the local school systems in Memphis. I've heard they aren't so good.😕 Didn't know where outside of Memphis to look and how the school systems work: city, county, private, ect.

If anyone has children in schools in Memphis (or knows someone who does) I would love to hear from you

Thanks bunches🙂

I'd call the admissions office; they'd certainly be able to help you out! # is on website, or you can PM me and I can give it to you.
